I’m pretty understanding and that way it won’t happen again. This way it avoids putting up with all the crap your landlord will give you from that point on.

Both bldgs. I’ve lived in Hfx. had explicit rules about complaints. Don’t approach your neighbour, tell us and we’ll approach them about noise. It really does avoid a potential conflict with neighbours as your complaint remains anonymous. The problem I have is with the noise by-laws that require no noise levels after 7:30 pm on weekdays and I think (not sure on this one) 7:00pm on Saturdays. That’s just patently ridiculous. It’s 11pm everywhere else in the country. We’re not noisy people at all. About once a year we host a party for our friends and co-workers just because. At least 2 dozen people show up and those who have kids bring them along. It’s a great party with a BBQ and lots of different foods for different cultures/tastes and plenty of spirits. It starts (indoors) about 4pm after we’ve all returned from a couple of hours at Kearny lake (for the kids). By 9:00pm everyone has left. Do you believe we got 3 complaints of noise last year?!? ….Let me define noise … people talking and laughing on the gallery while some smoked. Kids running and making glee (not out of control either) and we’re on the bottom floor. The only ones they were possibly disturbing were the cars parked in the garage below. 3 F’N complaints!!!! I know who complained too even though the super wouldn’t say. There are old foggies living in this building that demand peace and quiet ALL the time. If your door happens to slam behind you accidentally, you’re coming home to a complaint. I wish these people who can’t tolerate living around other people would just move the hell out into the country in complete solitude. I caught one of them complaining about another neighbour in the lobby one day and I interrupted her and said ” Don’t worry honey, you’re getting very old and soon you’ll have all the quiet anyone could ever want … 6 ft. under!”I know there are loud obnoxious neighbours in every community in HRM, but most people are reasonable about noise levels. Those who complain about any noise at all just demonstrate they cannot live among normal people and should be told to suck it up. There’s so many REACTIONARY by-laws in this town that are begging to be challenged in court. I’m hosting another party this year and this time it’s gloves off. I’m posting a note in the lobby that we are expecting a lot of people over on that day and the noise levels will be slightly higher than usual, but not excessive. If you don’t think you can handle it, please make arrangements to be out between 4 to 9pm. Complaints will be ignored.

Go ahead, scroll up..The bitch was about my neighbour lying to our landlord about coming over to complain about our ‘raging party’. Believe me..he has every right to call and complain about whatever he wants. But let’s face it, if you’re going to invent stories about confronting your neighbours about ‘keeping the noise down’, all you end up doing is coming off like a complete skid. A couple of months ago, this same guy had a party of his own. His guests were running around in the hallways screaming, throwing bottlecaps off of the balcony..making a ton of noise. We thought since they’d just moved in, and it was thier first saturday night there, no big deal. One of the other tennants complained about thier noise, and ever since then, this douchebag has been trying to get on the good side of the property managers. (according to the landlord himself). So yes, we had a couple of friends over one night and the volume of our conversation may have carried over to his apartment. We were well aware of the fact that it was after 11pm, and had turned the tunes down as not to disturb other tennants in the building. Like i said before..he had the right to complain if we were keeping him up, (because as you pointed out in your reply, some people actually have to work in the morning. -thanks btw. i was under the impression that everyone was on the same exact schedule as me!)Anyway. Next time i think he’s being too loud, i think i’ll go over and knock on his door. Just to show him how easy it really is.
