Matt Mays and El Torpedo
Saturday November 26 at The Marquee Club
If you needed proof that Matt Mays has completely won over the ears and throats of his audience, the final show of the six-week Wicked Come Winter tour should have erased any doubt. For the second sold-out night in a row, the show started with a synthesizer prog-rock intro but quickly got straight down to business. The sing-alongs started early, with the crowd belting out old favourites like “City of Lakes” and newer hits like “Travellin.’” Mays seemed surprised at his own mastery, smiling in awe as the audience threatened to drown out the band. They kept things fresh with a few dub touches, a new song and some truly questionable but oddly endearing dance moves. (Ever seen a group of robots playing point-the-guitar tag?) Openers The Novaks returned to the stage for a raucous 10-person finale performance of “On the Hood.” There was perhaps no sweeter sight than every last person in the sweltering Marquee jumping, dancing, laughing and singing. Something to keep in mind this winter: Matt Mays and El Torpedo for prime minister.
