On Broken Social Scene’s fourth album the motto is Go Big or Go Home. Everything here is big — big production, big sound, big guitars, big choruses. It is as if they took the liveliest and grandest moments from You Forgot it in People and exploded them into the cosmos. Pretty much gone are the quieter and more drawn-out pieces that defined Bee-Hives and Feel Good Lost. But the band has not given up experimenting here and there: “Ibi Dreams of Pavement” is a five-minute-long coda from start to finish. And “Hotel” trades in the trademark jam-fest for a quasi-dance club groove. The closest thing this disc has to a single is “Superconnected,” a fierce, dense uptempo number with an irresistible groove, which is destined to become a crowd favourite.
