Kannon Beach swag

The surfing community, and the downtown Halifax shopping district, were hit with a one-two punch in December when both DaCane Surf Shop and If Only Surf Shop broke the news that they’d both be closing. But thankfully it seems that when two doors close, another one opens. Veteran on the surf scene, the Lawrencetown-based Kannon Beach (4144 Lawrencetown Road) is bringing DaCane’s old space (5239 Blowers Street) back to life by opening a downtown shop, something owner Jason Beach says he’s wanted to do for a long time.

“The news of DaCane was a final factor for us opening. This location has been a surf shop for so many years, I really like the location, it’s got lots of character and was a good opportunity,” he says. And after 19 years of success in Lawrencetown with gear and apparel sales and rental, as well as lessons, Beach has no doubts about Kannon’s future in a new neighbourhood. “We believe we’ll be successful downtown by keeping our values of service, friendly and knowledgable staff and stock that people will want to see. Small business is difficult, but being good to customers got us a strong client base.”

Kannon Beach’s new second location will be undergoing some big time renos, but Beach says they’ll be open through most of the work. As of next week the shop will welcome those of you looking for winter surf gear check out the new digs. Beach also invites you to keep an eye on the progress via Facebook and Instagram.
