What’s wrong?

Slow-going bridge construction.

Who’s responsible?

Alison MacDonald, Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission, 402-0773.

REMARKS

Erection of the euphemistically named “safety barriers” on the Macdonald Bridge should have been completed by now, but so far reach only about halfway across one side of the bridge. Blame the manufacturer, says MacDonald, but the work will still be complete by the end of the year.

Send your favourite municipal malfunction to onpatrol@thecoast.ca, or call 422-6278 ext. 113.

Survey Asks

Do you agree with Halifax's school board cutting 152 teachers?

  • Yes, the board needs to meet its shrinking budget.
  • Only if managers and bureaucracy get a similar cut.
  • I don't care, I support the private education system.
  • No, giving young citizens the best education is too important to cut.

I am very thankful that barriers are starting to appear on bridges. As a recent survivor of suicide loss in NB I lost my uncle in June because he jumped of the reversing falls bridge in St.John NB. I hope that we can do something to get these barriers put on all bridges. NO it may not save them all but it certainly helps more than it hinders...thank you to the bridge commission for making this a priority.

They can just jump between the bridge roadway and extended bike/pedestrain walkways. Wasn't their nets or something there before - jesus next will be 12 foot barriers ontop the ferry ?

The barriers will not deter a jumper. They can place their feet in the middle to pry themselves up and over.

Hard to find a real problem in the city for The Coast? The steel fabrication doesn't just make these ridiculous barriers, they have other clients as well and I'm sure all the jobs are given their fair share of fabrication time each day in the shop. It's not like you can go to walmart and buy a set of custom made barriers the same day.
