The Obedients at The Sex Festival

Go! That's an order

Life conspired against me so that I didn’t get to see The Obedients until near the end of its very short run, but I wish I’d had time to sing its praises loud and long. It is a very clever adaptation by local playwright Lee-Anne Poole of Jean Genet’s The Maids. Poole has set Genet’s disturbing story of two servant girls with murderous intentions in the world of BDSM, and the transposition works beautifully. How incredible is it that Halifax is home to the perfect duo to play Sol and Clare, Poole’s twisted “sisters”? Stewart and Margaret Legere are both amazing and accomplished actors, easy on the eyes and obviously completely at home in their role of siblings. It’s also difficult to take your eyes off Matthew Peach as the leggy Mistress in sky-high boots, and he does a terrific turn as the petulant dominatrix. There’s one more show, and if you get there, don’t linger in the bar at intermission lest you miss the floggings.

Sunday, November 28, 3PM Matinee
Plutonium Playhouse (2315 Hunter St.)
$20 / $15
