The World Cup is upon us and footie fever is high, especially with the announcement that Canada will be one of three host countries for the 2026 tourney. If you want to brush up on your World Cup knowledge, or just can’t get enough of soccer, here is a brief primer on who to watch. […]
World Cup
World Cup – Hali Style
Yesterday’s highly anticipated match between Euro giants Spain and Germany brought out the best crowds in downtown Halifax I have seen so far for the World Cup. It was a crowd worthy of the biggest game of the tournament. It was considered a ‘final’ in a sense due to the sheer magnitude of the teams […]
Fabio Capello – Passionate Coach.
I would absolutely love to be on the England bench during the World Cup with a bag of popcorn in my hands.
Go USA… ?
Donovan = US Hero. I know the phrase ‘GO USA’ is not a popular one around these parts; but yesterday’s game was a reason why we all love the World Cup – not because we love the USA, but because we love drama. USA facing elimination against Algeria, score a goal in the 91st minute […]
France loses. Ireland does a jig.
Thierry Henry-Irish enemy #1. So France lost to South Africa today. Then apparently French head coach Raymond Domenech refused to shake hands with South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, according to ITV and this Guardian play-by-play. What’s on your plate, mate? Eating for World Cup
I will admit that when it comes to footy, without my Canadian Roots shirt (and no Irish or Estonian teams), I shift allegiances without much thought. Yesterday I was excited for Italy, in part because we were watching the game at the Italian Cultural Centre (an event I highly recommend). That and my German side is rooting along with a Propeller Hefeweizen. But I need a better system. So I’m going to eat and
Just watch it
Normally I’d be embarrassed to blog a YouTube vid that’s both old (it went up a month ago) and popular (15 million views). But this three-minute Nike ad, starring a bunch of soccer greats plus other celebs including Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer and Homer Simpon, is so amazing it should have 15 billion views. […]
Spain – Disappointing the World and Halifax too.
Eser Toprak Spanish fans on Spring Garden – The day wasn’t as colorful as they had hoped. Walking around downtown Halifax on a Wednesday at 10:15 AM, the last thing you expect to see is a line of red Spanish jerseys getting ready to watch the World Cup game between Spain and Switzerland. While sitting […]
Hate World Cup? You’re not alone…
This is why women hate soccer. Coverage for every major sporting event, from World Cup to Stanley, always falls into the same sexist trap: what about the poor, poor wives of the knuckle-dragging men who watch the damn sports. Because ladies like to be pampered and cuddled. Apparently we want to talk about our feelings […]
