Word On The Street
Become a master of arts this fall
Fall in Halifax is something special, as festivals and art organizations brace for the colder days a-comin’ with a packed calendar of events that’ll challenge, educate and entertain you. Here are a few that are a great intro to the local arts scene. Keep an eye out for more in our Fall Arts issue September […]
Wine and words, the perfect pair
Word on the Street and Bishop’s Cellar have been pairing up wines with books by local authors and having them on display for the whole month of April. But this has only been a sampling of what’s in store for us. The pairings are to whet everyone’s literary appetites for the big event that will […]
The history of Freedom
“I taught junior and senior high for 32 years and I realized there were no really good materials about Black history, most people skipped over it. No one took out *Beneath the Clouds of the Promised Land* from the book room,” says Nova Scotian author and poet Gloria Ann Wesley. “I thought, ‘what will they […]
Word On The Street books it
Literary extravaganza Word On The Street is back on the water (or, near it anyway) this Sunday, September 23 (11am-5pm, on the wharves behind the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic). Featuring a “literary theme park” with a marketplace showing off the wares of publishers and booksellers, readings, workshops and more authors than you can shake […]
The Word on the Street Spelling Bee for Adults: OH YES
Word On The Street‘s first ever spelling bee fundraiser is the perfect chance to blow off the steam built up from years of looking at misspelled signs, menus or texts. Thursday, March 8, 7-11 pm at Murphy’s the Cable Wharf Restaurant, you and your team could show them all. For this year’s fundraiser, WOTS put […]
Word On The Street puts books on the water
If you’re bussing it to Word on the Street on Sunday, September 25 (11am-5pm), hold on to your transfer—you might need it to hop on the ferry. That’s because this year, Halifax’s chapter of the national book and magazine festival spans both sides of the harbour, with readings and exhibitors located on the wharves behind […]
Word On The Street 2011 hits the deck
[image-1] Word On The Street has decided it’s better where it’s wetter and are taking the whole shebang onto Halifax Harbour. WOTS partnered up with Waterfront Development and Maritime Museum of the Atlantic to “enjoy our Maritime heritage” and, presumably, fresh air and sunshine. Readings will be held on Theodore Tugboat and the CSS Acadia, on the Metro Transit ferry for events on Alderney Landing. “We are certain that this innovative approach will heighten the already rich variety of readings, discussions and interviews people are used to enjoying at Word On The Street,” says Colleen Ritchie, WOTS executive director. Halifax’s
Word on the Street moves back to the street
This is great news, considering the fate of the free festival was uncertain, but Word on the Street will be back outside this year, September 26 at Victoria Park, 11am-5pm. The event, which was indoors for the past 10 years, will be under a tent, with plans to move inside (location unknown) if weather doesn’t […]
Word on the Street’s time up?
Can this face save Word on the Street? If you pay attention to the Halifax literary scene then you know that the Word on the Street festival is going through some tough times. WOTS missed out on a $10,000 grant from the Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. Michael Noonan, the department’s spokesperson, says the […]
Atwood’s army comes to Halifax
Margaret Atwood is coming to Halifax’s Word On The Street on September 27. Well, not exactly. Atwood’s LongPen will be here, but she’ll physically be at WOTS in Toronto, signing copies of her new novel, The Year of the Flood, for fans in Halifax and Vancouver with the use of her trusty robotic Bic. Maybe it sounds like CanLit porn, but you’ll be able to interact with Mags through a “private video chat.”
