Where to Play: Fairlanes

For a long time, I associated bowling alleys solely with the Cosmic Fridays of my youth, watching pals throw gutter balls under disco lights while Dance Mix ’95 blared in the background. It also turns out that you can put bands in a bowling alley, compounding the good times for all. Musician and CKDU host […]

HPX Goes North

animal dance! animal dance! Bad news: This past week, the Elephant and Castle closed, meaning that the restaurant’s basement bar – home to Three Sheet’s Thursday hip-hop parties, along with many other shows — is now gone. Crud! More bad news: the Halifax Pop Explosion had a bunch of shows booked there, including Les Breastfeeders […]

A Very Special Punk Cover Show

Cock Sparrer I know what you’re thinking, jaded reader. “So whaat’s the deal with this Saturday’s punk show at the Seahorse?” you might ask in your best Seinfeldian warble. Well, for one thing, this show features a Wire cover band (comprised of No Flyers Please.) When’s the last time you heard songs from Pink Flag […]

Evolve 2011: Day 3

On Sunday, most of our camp staggered towards their cars, headed home. Around ten of us decided to stay, despite the plump grey clouds hanging ominously above us. At this point my tent, bedding, clothes and rainboots were so mud-fucked that it didn’t matter. We stayed. There is something very decadent about drinking red wine […]

Full Evolve Lineup Announced

Man Man The full Evolve Festival lineup was released today, and it’s massive. Those wild and crazy nutters in Man Man, hippie-thingies Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, former Jurassic 5 rapper Chali 2na and last year’s show-stealer Fred Penner are all on the bill, while notable first-timers include No Flyers Please and the Belle Comedians. The Sheepdogs – the Saskatoon-based rock outfit who are in the finals to win a contest to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone – will also be playing. Other popular DJ/dancey acts returning from previous years include Mat the Alien, Pretty Lights and

You can listen to them every day, regardless of mood, locale or sobriety, and the music is bound […]

Ladies and Gentlemen: No Flyers Please

It is totally misleading to “introduce” No Flyers Please, since they’ve been active in Halifax, on and off, for about four years. The group first got together when high school pals Isaac Hansen (bass) and Michelle Skelding (drums) decided to form a band. They put a post on Halifaxlocals.com and Dale Boudreau (a guitarist you may also recognize from such bands as Myles Deck and the Fuzz) responded. After practicing for four months, the trio were ready for Rockin’ 4 Dollar$ – but still didn’t have a name. Their eyes flew to Hansen’s mailbox, and No Flyers Please was

Step Up for Stepping Stone

Speaking to Stepping Stone director Rene Ross the other day, I was pretty surprised to learn that the organization (which offers support and outreach to sex workers and former sex workers) has never had a fundraiser before. “We try to only ask for donations when we really need it,” Ross explains. With cutbacks and a […]

They will be joined by The Bad Arts and Something Delicious. The CD is $5 and will be available at shows, around Halifax or through the band (email noflyersplease@gmail.com.) […]

Cover Me Badd

As most of you well know, cover songs are tricky beasts. A bad cover can permanently derail a career (see Madonna’s version of “American Pie” or a recurring nightmare I have called “Puff Daddy, Come with Me.”) But sometimes what begins as a fanboy/fangirl trifle can sometimes evolve into a moment of career-defining genius. I […]
