To the editor, In reference to the winter parking ban, I personally am at wits’ end. Halifax is robbing us blind with parking tickets this winter season! I understand that snowplows need to get through, but my shelling out $300 this season doesn’t solve the problem. My past four years here taught me that there […]

Car idling figureheads
To the editor, I was excited to see the big, fancy, flag-waving car pulling up half in front of my house and half in front of the church next door February 1. “Wheeeee,” I said to myself as lieutenant governor Mayann Francis was escorted from the car and disappeared behind the walls of the house […]
Exposed racism
Dear Lezlie Lowe, I thought” your information in “Hidden racism” (Jan. 29, Lowedown) was well-researched and well-written. You brought things to people’s attention that we may not have realized, especially locked-up black hair products in Shoppers Drug Mart. I can understand where Shoppers is coming from. If something is getting stolen 10 times more than […]
Get internationally involved
Dear Tim Bousquet and your slacker audience, As a local non-profit, we were gleeful to see your Get Involved Guide grace the cover of The Coast last week (Jan. 29). We loved the cliche-resistant tone of the article, which catered to your average semi-apathetic “slackers” looking for info, not the warm-fuzzies. We couldn’t help but notice […]
Green cabinet shuffle
To the editor, Regarding “Enviro shakeup” (Jan. 22, Sustainable City), I think Chris Benjamin has missed some very good news for the environment in the recent provincial cabinet shuffle. When ministers change, one department’s loss is another’s gain. In this case, Brooke Taylor is very highly respected in the agricultural community, and no one I know is […]
Enviro-failure exposed
To the editor, I would like to commend Tim Bousquet for exposing the fact that the Nova Scotia government has not met its 2008 targets as outlined in the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act (“Environmental failure, Reality Bites” Jan. 15). The Nova Scotia government needs to be reminded that Nova Scotians are aware of […]
Buses, not wider Bayers
To the editor, I have to agree with Tim Bousquet’s opinion that widening Bayers Road is not a solution to the traffic problem, but something needs to change there (“Bayers Road widening,” Reality Bites, Jan. 29). I own a house in Timberlea, and have rented it out and moved back into the city because the […]
Long-term horse sickness
Thanks to The Coast for bringing into the public realm the situation of the horses at Bengal Lancers. The Lancers are a non-profit organization and rely on public money to support their mission, which includes programs, according to their website, to “teach the fundamentals of riding and allow all the participants to take an active […]
Not a lonely wilderness
To Tim Bousquet, New protected areas are not created by individuals. Your portrayal of the effort to protect the Blue Mountain—Birch Cove Lakes behind Bayers Lake in “Into the wild” (Dec. 18) was a glorification of one individual among many who initiated the call and fought for the protection of the near-urban natural area. For […]
Wark STILL wrong about Israel
Bruce Wark, Just how long did you live in the Middle East? What is your frame of reference that you claim to understand the dynamic that is the complicated Israeli/Palestinian/Hamas relationship in your article, “War crimes” I was inclined to believe, as you did, that perhaps the Israeli reaction to these things is overzealous—maybe even […]
Wark wrong about Israel
It’s unfortunate that Bruce Wark doesn’t do his homework before condemning Israel outright in War crimes. It is also unfortunate that he didn’t consult any Israelis about the trauma they have suffered over the years. The shooting of rockets for years by Hamas into populated centres, with the primary objective being civilian casualties, is the equivalent of “living” a life which combines Russian roulette with Chinese water torture. Using words such as “slaughter” and “massacre” indicates ignorance and belittles the suffering of others—such as Darfurians— and indicates a lack of appreciation for the fact that the resolution of the conflict
Wark wrong on Israel
Mostly, I like Bruce Wark’s editorials. But War crimes (Jan. 12), not so much. He essentially blames Israel for the whole conflict and labels Israel an oppressor. Perhaps Wark’s column is designed as a counterattack on the so called pro-Israel bias in the press. Yet, we must ask why the press is so biased. Are […]
