On Saturday, the world will once again mourn the loss of Kurt Cobain: tomorrow, February 20th, would have been his 49th birthday. Without a doubt, the Nirvana frontman is one of the most influential and legendary figures in the history of rock music. In a few short years (roughly five), he made his Seattle garage […]

In-Flight Safety’s Got Stockholm Syndrome
Halifax’s careful ambient pop-band In-Flight Safety recently released a new single, “Stockholm,” to announce a new EP to be released in September, alongside a couple mini-tours in the fall. Plus, visual artist Graeme Patterson is currently working on a music vid to be released later this month, says the band’s vocalist/guitarist John Mullane. No surprise that […]
In-Flight Safety representing Canada for Grammy Week
Yer boys In-Flight Safety have been chosen—along with fellow Canadians Chantal Kreviaziuk and Yukon Blonde—to represent Canada’s chilly and cool musical output during Grammy Week in LA, February 5 at a private affair presented by the Canadian Independent Music Association. Who knew the Grammys needed a whole week though? Good news for the In-Flights, and […]
Conversationalist
Conversationalist (Night Danger) For all its tailored complexity, symphonic nuances and thoughtful studio production, there are primitive elements on In-Flight Safety’s 10-track album Conversationalist, released in September on Night Danger Records and mixed by Gus Van Go in New York (The Stills, Hollerado). The band’s third record appears five years after We Are an Empire, […]

Day 5: South By Southwest 2011
FNL’s The Landing Strip. It’s REAL. Driving to dinner on my last evening in Austin, I am trying to navigate the side streets outside the downtown core in my car, the GPS taking me to parts of the Texas capital I haven’t seen before. Specifically, near the airport. And that’s when I see her. Suddenly, I drive by a gentleman’s club called Landing Strip. Not just any strip club. But the strip club from one of the best, if not THE best television shows of all time and surely the best show about Texas ever, Friday Night Lights. It’s almost
Day 2: South By Southwest 2011
Walking down the street after parking about a mile and a half away from downtown, we run into In-Flight Safety’s John Mullane, wandering the streets, unable to find his hotel. This pretty much sums up the South By Southwest experience. John Mullane of IFS talks SXSW The sheer immensity of this festival, the amount of bands playing at any given time, and the many options across an area of a few square miles can leave one a little dazed and confused. That brings up a quote from that famous Austin-shot, 1993 movie, Dazed and Confused. To paraphrase, sitting at the

SXSW Roundup
I have been getting a few emails with SXSW news so I thought I would share. Sadly Long Long Long will no longer be accompanying the Halifax contingent to the festival due to a lack of funding. The band says they’re still planning on a spring/summer 90-day tour through the US (with a few select Canada dates.) Duzheknew and Cousins will still be attending the festival as part of an insane 65-date U.S. and Canada tour. Carmen Townsend, In-Flight Safety and Rich Aucoinare also heading down, as is Jenn Grant.Halifax hip-hop will also be represented with the presence of
In-Flight Safety sign with Conehead, head to SXSW
beldar say: EXCELLENT NEWS In-Flight Safety have joined Cousins, Duzheknew and Long Long Long as part of the Halifax contingent headed to SXSW in mid-March. They’ve folded the Austin dates into a mega-tour through Europe that ends April 15 back in Charlottetown. As the cherry on the fun-cake, the band has signed with the UK label Conehead. Well good on you, boyees! The band plays the Paragon on March 4. Below, in no particular order, my favorite photo of the band (by Jule Malet-Veale) a photo of some tacos, and a recipe for fish tacos that someone sent me on
