Friends, warm weather, great food and (free) drinks in mid-March. Sounds like a trip to Cuba, right? Throw in 2000 bands playing over a five-day span and 130,000 music fans roaming the greater downtown area of Austin, Texas and you get the audiophile’s version of Spring Break. It’s time again for South By Southwest, the […]

SXSW Roundup
I have been getting a few emails with SXSW news so I thought I would share. Sadly Long Long Long will no longer be accompanying the Halifax contingent to the festival due to a lack of funding. The band says they’re still planning on a spring/summer 90-day tour through the US (with a few select Canada dates.) Duzheknew and Cousins will still be attending the festival as part of an insane 65-date U.S. and Canada tour. Carmen Townsend, In-Flight Safety and Rich Aucoinare also heading down, as is Jenn Grant.Halifax hip-hop will also be represented with the presence of
Ghettosocks Nominated for a Juno
Ghettosocks‘ album Treat of the Day has been nominated in the “Rap Recording of the Year’ category alongside some pretty estimable artists, including Shad, D-cisive, Drake and Eternia & MoSS. Also, Meaghan Smith was nominated for New Artist of the Year, Classified got a Song of the Year nod for “Oh Canada” and Old Man […]
Pop Explosion Night 5: Wreckage
Saturday morning, I figured I was pretty much a goner. Still in last night’s clothes, my eyes were crusted with shame and indifference. A pair of hands pulled me out of bed and we staggered to the Just Friends Brunch to find out ALL THE FOOD WAS GONE. At 11am. Great news for the brunch […]
Best MC
Every time we hear Ghettosocks, we drool. Our Pavlovian response might be from his Treat of the Day blog posts, but most likely it’s from the Ghettosocks sandwich at Good Food Emporium: That heavenly lunch goodness came about thanks to Darren Pyper, who used to always order grilled cheese sammies and ask for avocado and […]
Twin Peaks (Ghettosocks & Muneshine), Windom Earle, DJ Jorun Bombay
Ghettosocks and Muneshine (pictured above) are entering the town between the peaks with their new rap group—Twin Peaks. “We’ve completed recording and are in the process of mixing a 15-song rap album that loosely fuses David Lynch’s work (i.e. Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, etc.) with braggadocious rhymes, over an assortment of original […]
Blondie (and lots more) cover night at the Seahorse this Saturday
Blondie is for lovers, and a Blondie cover set on Valentine’s Eve (is that a thing?) could be just the ticket to seal the deal with your fit bird/bloke. February 13 at the Seahorse (10pm) Jenocide and Windom Earle perform as Blondie again, for your love. The night also includes sets by Jorun and Ghettosocks […]
Ghettosocks’ tasty Treat
Halifax-based MC Ghettosocks went from updating his Facebook profile and Twitter account with his “treat of the day,” to basing the concept of his new album, aptly titled Treat of the Day, around the idea. “I was kind of compelled to do this treat-of-the-day thing,” says Ghettosocks, AKA Darren Pyper. “For albums I get on […]
Fall music review
September Releases York Redoubt, s/t (Noyes/Hot Money) After a coast-to-coast summer tour, including a coveted slot at Calgary’s Sled Island Festival, York Redoubt releases its self-titled full-length. Recorded by uber-engineers Charles Austin and Dave Ewenson, this fantastic album is full of sonic surprises, melding noise, harmonies and ragged lo-fi goodness. September 5 at The Seahorse […]
Three Sheet heat
Firefighters in full uniform jump from a red truck parked outside Elephant & Castle. The shrill fire drill still screams from the now-empty basement where a diverse mix of Three Sheet addicts thrives on the hip-hop group every Thursday night. “I wore my nice bra,” singer Vanessa Furlong says loudly over the buzz of 50 […]
