Halifax knows it’s a music hub. It’s the east coast’s magnet for rockstars-on-the-rise and is full of the quiet certainty that, at any given venue on any given night, you’ll happen upon some serious local talent onstage–someone that’s not just good for a small city, but fucking good, full stop. So, really, who’s surprised that […]

The Fed Pennies Enjoy an ECMA Cocktail
Last week the Fed Pennies took home Best Loud Recording at the 2011 ECMAs for their debut album Brain Disaster, beating out Orchid’s Curse, Last Call Chernobyl and Obsydian. For the band, it’s a career highlight (closely followed, we imagine, by opening for Ozzy Osbourne at the Metro Centre in 2008.) Lead singer Jake Smith answered a few of my questions about the award, the East Coast Loud tour and the band’s future plans. How’d it feel to hear you’d won an ECMA? I knew I wanted to keep the acceptance speech short because I can’t stand it when
ECMA Goes Electronic
This new stage is the brainchild of electronic musician Aaron Collier. For the first time ever, the ECMAs will be hosting an electronic music showcase in Charlottetown on April 15 and 16. It’s the brainchild of Electro East, a group of representatives from the electronic music community across the Maritimes. Eight artists will be chosen through a jury to perform at the stage, and submissions are open to a variety of genres. Head to electro-east.ca to learn more about the criteria for this event and apply. The deadline is Tuesday February 15 – submissions close at midnight. The jury should

Never Mind the Bullocks – Here’s the ECMA results
A Razzie and an Oscar? Who am I, Julia Roberts? Man, I need something to wash the boring-as-shit taste of last night’s Academy Awards out of my mouth. You can re-visit the Coast’s infinitely more entertaining liveblog of the event, and if you want to read some funny celebrity Tweets about the event, go here. […]
Sydney snaps: ECMAs day one
Coast photographer Scott Blackburn is our eyes and ears this weekend at the ECMAs. Tough job. Here are the day one highlights. Is it me, or is there a lot of style going on in Sydney?

No Sleep ‘Till Sydney?
Sadly Scene and Heard will be missing out on the ECMAs this year. Instead your humble narrator will spend the weekend as she usually does, talking about herself in the third person, watching Walker Texas Ranger and drinking Wildcat until she cries. She was really looking forward to all these mini-festivals and “No-Cases” for up-and-coming […]
Host the White Stripes, March 16
If you’re still wounded that the White Stripes‘ documentary Under the Great White Lights was cancelled at this year’s Atlantic Film Festival, there’s more disappointing news (especially if you read the misleading Exclaim article that says there’s an upcoming Halifax screening), unless you’re heading to the ECMAs. The film is showing across the country over […]
