This weekend, car loads of compatriots, wagons of wonderful merchants, vans full of families and campers full of campers made their way to Sackville, New Brunswick to take part in the seventh annual Sappyfest: an independent music festival that takes place over three days in the heart of the heart of the heart of the […]

Halifax heads to Sled Island
gianna lauren It’s officially summer touring season, with a whole cluster of Halifax bands headed all over which where. The latest event is Sled Island, which has been producing an increasingly bomb lineup of musical talent from across Canada and the world for about five years now. This year’s festival runs from June 22 – […]
Get Transfixed Tonight
You may remember Matt Samways from the great, dead Truro noise band PIG. Tonight at Lost and Found he’ll be debuting a new project with Ian Phillips called TRANSFIXED. Basically he takes the parts I actually like about industrial music – hollow vocals and chugging tempos – and spreads them on a soft, minimal sound […]
Friday Five: Pool Party Rock Steady
will james quall make a guest appearance in your weekend? The Scene and Heard Suggested Weekend Guide for May 6 -9: 1) Come home from work tonight, do your relaxing Friday thing, whatever it may be (drinking beer in the backyard, playing Call of Duty: Black Ops, writing in your diary, making dinner, snorting bath salts.) 2) Then put this song on. TIME TO FREAK. 3) Wake up the next morning and there’s weird cups all over your apartment with gross booze and ooze and wet fruit in them, your cat is hiding, and when you have a shower, a
Go To The Seahorse Tonight
We’ve already trumpeted news of this event a few times, but it bears repeating: there’s a mighty fine SXSW sendoff show going on tonight with your favorite bands – Dog Day, Duzheknew, Secret Colours and Cousins. There is a suggested $10 donation at the door to help the bands allay their travel costs, and you […]
A Very Noyes Offer
As I write this, I am sick as hell and listening to the song “Scratches” from Dog Day’s forthcoming 7” of the same title. It’s the shiny type of song that makes you feel like you might be sticking your head out of a car window somewhere, and it’s almost June, and the light from […]

SXSW Roundup
I have been getting a few emails with SXSW news so I thought I would share. Sadly Long Long Long will no longer be accompanying the Halifax contingent to the festival due to a lack of funding. The band says they’re still planning on a spring/summer 90-day tour through the US (with a few select Canada dates.) Duzheknew and Cousins will still be attending the festival as part of an insane 65-date U.S. and Canada tour. Carmen Townsend, In-Flight Safety and Rich Aucoinare also heading down, as is Jenn Grant.Halifax hip-hop will also be represented with the presence of
Long Duz Mike
I love when Duzheknew plays shows because they always somehow manage to amalgamate the name of each band on the lineup into an onomatopoeic email title (see above.) In an interesting but somehow sort of ideal triplicate, they will be joining Long Long Long and Mike O’Neill at the Seahorse this Saturday. O’Neill will be performing an entire set based on the lives of various composers because of course he is and Mike O’Neill, I just fucking love you. Meanwhile Duzheknew will be doing the music thing and also doing the zine thing, releasing a work entitled “T-Shirt Rapidshare”
Cousins and Duzheknew play SXSW
burrito bike, meet taco town I imposed a Facebook moratorium on myself today, but right before I did so, I saw that both Cousins and Duzheknew had posted on their fanpages that they got into SXSW. WOW that is fun. You can see the list of the bands playing so far here. (Note that Cuz/Duz […]
The Modern Covers
hi handsome! Another weekend, another cover show? I’m not complaining, especially when the show in question features a Modern Lovers tribute band. Remember the Modern Lovers? Remember sitting with your stupid friends laughing at the line “Pablo Picasso never got called an asshole,” and wondering why no one else thought it was funny? Well, you can sing your heart out with like-minded souls to the tribute band at the Seahorse this Saturday (10:30pm, $6), along with Iggy and the Stooges and Blondie. We asked the responsible musicians to share their favorite tribute songs with us and tell us why their
