Over the last six years, more than 250 Nova Scotians have died of drug overdoses. Across the entire country in that time, more than 25,000 people have died of overdoses, largely due to a drug supply tainted by substances like fentanyl. “In Canada we have two public health emergencies: the COVID-19 pandemic and the poisoned […]

Halifax should follow Vancouver’s lead and decriminalize drugs
While the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic shows no signs of slowing, another Canadian public health issue is worsening: The opioid crisis. Across the country, we are experiencing record-high numbers of drug-related deaths. Last week, in a move to mitigate this crisis, Vancouver city councillors unanimously voted to request that the federal government decriminalize […]
The Coast’s back to school guide to drugs
A survey last spring by researchers at UBC says young people hate being told to ‘just say no’. The truth is, there are drugs out there. You might meet people who do them. If you decide to try them, there are risks. Last year, 56 people in Nova Scotia died of accidental opioid overdoses. We don’t want […]
Three more NSLC stores to sell cannabis
The market’s not even open for business yet and the province is already expanding its territory. There will be three more NSLC stores selling cannabis this fall, bringing the total number of legal weed retail outlets in Nova Scotia to 12. “Since we announced the first nine stores that would sell cannabis, NSLC has been […]
Halifax in the weeds on cannabis regulation
This city needs a lot more muscle if it wants to control the legalized drug game. On Tuesday, Halifax council voted to create a municipal framework for cannabis to help fill in some of the blanks on what exactly the municipality’s role will be once the plant is legalized for recreational use this fall. Councillor […]
A decade late, Halifax police close the book on its Drug Exhibit Audit

The Criminal Investigations Division superintendent presented his final audit update to the Board of Police Commissioners on Tuesday, closing the book on a two-year black eye […]
Nova Scotia needs to anticipate a serious fentanyl problem
Health and Wellness officials say fentanyl use hasn’t escalated in Nova Scotia yet, but the province needs to work quickly to “get ahead of the problem.” Minister Leo Glavine and chief medical officer Dr. Robert Strang, who both attended the national conference on opioid use in Ottawa last weekend, told reporters at a press conference Wednesday that […]
Lil’ Kim Cancelled
cat impression time! Mraraownznz! A week after we posted that Lil’ Kim was coming to Alderney Landing (I’m too lazy to link – just scroll down like, one entry and you’ll find the original post) we got an email saying the event is canceled. I did some hard-hitting journalistic research and checked her Myspace page for more info (her website address doesn’t go to anything) but all I found out is that she calls herself “Mrs. G.O.A.T.” and then there’s a bunch of Dancing With the Stars videos. Then I got hungry and stopped caring. Tickets can be refunded wherever
Just sayin’
