NSMW: Part 3

Our own Alison Lang was up for an award for Media Professional of the Year at the Music Nova Scotia Music and Industry Awards brunch, so we headed to the Grand Ballroom in our nice shirts. It was sponsored by Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey so there was a bottle on every table. It wasn’t so bad […]

Music Nova Scotia Award Nominations

The 2011 Music Nova Scotia Music and Industry Award nominees were announced today. Carmen Townsend and Jenn Grant have racked up five nominations each, including Entertainer of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. (We’re also quite pleased to see that Grant’s ridiculously sweet video for “Getcha Good” – featuring Maynard St and the […]

Evolve 2011: Day one

Another Evolve has come and gone. As usual, it went by way too fast, and as usual I’m grungy and chunks of dirt and food are still falling out of my hair (after two showers!) But my head still feels like a mellow, happy swamp. This year is probably the busiest and craziest Evolve I’ve […]

Day 5: South By Southwest 2011

FNL’s The Landing Strip. It’s REAL. Driving to dinner on my last evening in Austin, I am trying to navigate the side streets outside the downtown core in my car, the GPS taking me to parts of the Texas capital I haven’t seen before. Specifically, near the airport. And that’s when I see her. Suddenly, I drive by a gentleman’s club called Landing Strip. Not just any strip club. But the strip club from one of the best, if not THE best television shows of all time and surely the best show about Texas ever, Friday Night Lights. It’s almost

SXSW Roundup

I have been getting a few emails with SXSW news so I thought I would share. Sadly Long Long Long will no longer be accompanying the Halifax contingent to the festival due to a lack of funding. The band says they’re still planning on a spring/summer 90-day tour through the US (with a few select Canada dates.) Duzheknew and Cousins will still be attending the festival as part of an insane 65-date U.S. and Canada tour. Carmen Townsend, In-Flight Safety and Rich Aucoinare also heading down, as is Jenn Grant.Halifax hip-hop will also be represented with the presence of

Carmen Townsend Is Opening for Heart

Carmen Townsend just announced via Twitter that she will be opening for Heart on their ENTIRE tour across Canada. Pretty sweet! They’re coming here February 3, in case you’ve forgotten. I haven’t. (and Mel I swear to God I am dropping money off for you tomorrow.) The tour begins January 28 in St. John’s and ends February 26 in Vancouver. She’s pretty much the ideal woman for this job, in my opinion – her vocals and style with the Shakey Deals make her an ideal pairing with Ann and Nancy. So far 2011 seems to be a good year

Talk of the Townsend

There are worse places to chase away mid-winter malaise than The Paragon Theatre on a Wednesday. The tables are laid with tea lights flickering like fireflies, the apricot beer is on special, and people lean their heads in to hear each other over the music thumping through the speakers. It’s Carmen Townsend’s third time playing […]
