Nova Scotia Music Week: Part 1
Nova Scotia Music Week, we are at you! After a three and a half hour drive through some undeniably pretty parts of Nova Scotia—and one stretch of what Tara Thorne was calling “a human centipede of traffic”—we arrived at the Rodd Grand Hotel feeling a little ill from reading on our phones while in the […]
Bad Vibrations Video: “What Now”
bad vibrations The always-weird-and-wonderful Heather Rappard has created a uncomfortable new video for my favorite nightmare rock n rollers Bad Vibrations. The video for “What Now”- from their upcoming album Black Train – features punks, grody basements, syringes with glowing mutagen-like substances, seizures and wild times. The album drops October 14 and the band kicks […]
The “Dog Days” Of Summer Are Here
beast in repose Here’s the post where we do the usual blathering about how it’s Friday and we’re going to drink mojitos or whatever, and garden badly, and burn off our friend’s arm hair with the BBQ (this actually happened last week) and try to hang out with as many dogs and cats as possible. […]
Coppin’ a Trip
It’s pretty impressive when your band embarks on a cross-Canada tour after barely a year of existence. When one of your bandmates bows out at the last minute and your basement gets flooded with sewage right before the trip, as was the case with Moncton’s Cop Shades, the situation grows slightly hairier. But somehow, everything worked out swimmingly for the tenacious psych-rockers. . Bassist and Moncton recording legend Kyle McDonald is still flying high from the trip, which took the trio from Halifax to Victoria last summer. (He’s currently joined by Remi Cormier on vocals and machines and Matt
B.A.’s Cheesy Birthday
i took this three years ago aw This weekend heralds the annual two-day drunk that accompanies the birth of the one-man genius of love, B.A. Johnston. He has assembled a powerful line-up to surround him on these two evenings: Friday features Homo Duplex, Bad Vibrations, Fat Stupids, and Hymn while on Saturday Windom Earle, Quivers and the Deadly Hearts bolster the show (both shows are $6.) And as a bonus (like, do you really need a bonus?) the show has been advertised as having an all-you-can-eat Cheezie bar. While I think Cheezies are kind of sick (I hate how your
No Reason for a Dead Leslie Nielsen
In some aspects 2010 was a pretty lame year, particularly when you consider that it was capped by the death of Lt. Frank Drebin. Anyway, I think we all need good music to chase away the annihilating frost of seasonal depression. I have a feeling the second annual No Reason for the Season show at […]
HPX Day Two: Bloody Wednesday
It’s already at that point in ‘Splode Week 2010 where you start to lose track of what you saw and where you went. I actually had to take a look at my hand and use all the residual stamps and stuff to figure out what happened first next last etc. It’s like a road map […]
Weekend Diary: Bad Vibrations and Evil Face-Dolls
I began the weekend watching a woman split a watermelon open with her thighs: hungry? Then there was some talk about Liberace. There was a very funny video where Liberace walked through his ostentatious house, playing piano on the carpet, in the bathtub, and in the closet, heh heh. “I bet Liberace and his driver […]
