How often does Owen Meany’s Batting Stance’s Daniel Walker have to explain his band’s name? “Ninety percent of the time,” he estimates. “People either aren’t familiar with the book”—John Irving’s A Prayer for Owen Meany—”or recognize the name but don’t know why.”  While his band will be playing Friday at In the Dead of Winter […]

Find you in the cypher

Last March, Martez Wiggins, AKA Woozy Blanks, looked around the cozy space of Alteregos on Gottingen Street and realized it was the perfect spot to bring together HRM’s hip-hop communities through freestyle rap events known as cyphers. Big Gottingen Street News: Backpackers hostel, Alteregos cafe poised for major expansion

Between the two sits Alteregos Coffee Shop and Halifax Backpackers hostel (2193 Gottingen Street), both owned by Michelle Strum. Most business owners would be horrified by the prospect of major construction taking place on either side of her, but Strum seems entirely nonplussed.

Cuppa brew

If the new library has a cafe, wouldn’t it be nice if it could have a bar, too? Wishful thinking, we know, but there are spots in the city where you can buy a coffee for one hand and a beer for the other. We took a sip out of the coffee-holding hand (honest) and […]
