Megan Hirons Mahon and her husband Oliver moved to Dartmouth just over a year ago and quickly noticed that in their neck of the woods there was no coffee option other than Tim Hortons—an incredibly sad reality, if you ask me. So when the former Karma Bridal space opened up, a mere few streets from their house, they decided to flex their entrepreneurial muscles.
This Friday The Darkside Cafe will open at 196 Windmill Road, but it’s not just a 20-seater cafe serving up espresso, sandwiches, soups and samosas—it’ll be an art gallery, too. The Darkside will focus on showing and selling work from local artists, eventually including Mahon’s own photographs. She encourages anyone interested in showing their work to get in touch.
“It’s a really nice family neighbourhood, young families with kids and artists. This can be a nice meeting place for the neighbourhood,” says Mahon of The Darkside. “We’re so proud to be part of the Dartmouth community, everyone in this area is. This is all about neighbourhood pride.”
