The Liberal government just keeps being the worst. CBC has a look at the impact from cutting $190,000 out of the consumer-led initiative grants, which funded a number of mental health programs. This week's Coast cover feature by Jacob Boon highlighted the Liberal's current public relations catastrophe, and here we have another dizzying example. Activist Katherine Taylor tells Brett Ruskin “people will die because of these cuts.” Maybe that's true, maybe not. A department spokesperson's email to Ruskin says the program was wasting money, and with that we're supposed to take the government at its word. If mental health money can be more efficiently spent, then by all means move it around. But if the decision will seriously impact people's lives, at least have the courtesy to offer more of an explanation than emailed talking points. That's even more necessary when overall health spending has increased, with the budget now surpassing $4 billion. Actions like these are what make the current government seem so scornful of the public. It's our money, but they can't explain how they're spending it.

Waye Mason's participatory budgeting party happens tonight at the Halifax Central Library. Downtown residents will decide how to spend the $94,000 in municipal grants District 7 receives each year. Potential projects include:
$10,000 for urban furniture on the Halifax Waterfront
$500 for a deployable scrabble board for community events
$20,000 for beautification and bike racks on Spring Garden Road
$15,695 for picnic tables and bike racks along University Ave. Boulevard
…and many more. Residents will get to view all the proposals, “science fair style,” before voting. The event kicks off at 6pm, with winners announced at 9.
