Halifax councillor Dawn Sloane wants the Public Gardens to be more
public. At Tuesday’s council meeting she asked that the city consider
lengthening the season for the park.
“I understand it can’t be open when there’s three feet of snow on
the path,” she says. “But there’s no reason we can’t keep it open until
the first snow or ice storm, and open it again when the weather’s nice.
In the sping, people want to see the crocuses and tulips.” Presently,
the gardens are open from the end of May to the beginning of
November.
Council unanimously approved her request to direct staff to research
the issue, and to bring back a report detailing costs and potential
liabilities. That report is expected this fall. —Tim Bousquet
