The good folks at the Good Food Emporium (2179 Gottingen Street, 422-3150) deserve a vacation, and they’re taking one whether you agree or not!

The popular Gottingen Street restro is closing from Saturday, August 7 through Sunday August 16. Remember to get a load of cookies before then, to hold you over through the week.

  1. …seriously? I just found this place and made plans to take my other half there on her birthday next week. When you can afford to close for a week and go on vacation in the middle of summer, who says downtown businesses don’t need our help? Maybe if we didn’t have such a laid-back attitude toward working out here in the maritimes, we’d be just a little bit more productive and wouldn’t need government handouts to stay afloat.

  2. citEm- guess what? most businesses are owned and RUN by the owners. And that might be the only way they can take a holiday, or do some remodelling or change their menu. Do you get a vacation? Many small business owners don’t and work most of the hours the business is open. So chill, and go the week after. (and what kind of government handouts do small, independent cafes get, anyway? Have you SEEN their tax bills?)

  3. @ralmn: …and the owners are giving all of their employees (fellow wage-earners who like me, can’t afford vacations – fyi) an unrequested and unpaid vacation by closing up for a week.

And I was speaking of maritime citizens as individuals; employee, employer, provinces, the maritimes as a whole entity…I think it should be pretty clear if you read what I said one more time. It’s just all too typical in the maritimes that somebody closes their business for a week straight in the middle of summer, in a tourist haven, even downtown in the most sprawling urban centre there is, to go on vacation. Maybe you are one of the many people born and bred out here that see nothing wrong with that, and wear those priorities on your sleeve with pride, but me? …nope.
