Once again, as we near the Jewish holiday of Passover there is no matzah to be found on the peninsula. I’m not asking for much. It’s a flat dry unleavened bread, it’s not like it is a challenging perishable item. It is essential to Passover. The usual location was sold out, another one “wasn’t carrying Passover food this year” and the third shop I visited today directed me towards the ryvita section. It has been like this every year I have lived here. Buck up Halifax—stock the matzah. —Disgruntled And Matzah-less

  1. Sigh. Yup. There were rumours that this was going to be a problem this year. I had it sent to me from family in Ottawa. I’ve gotten used to the scarcity of decent kosher meat here – if we can get it, it’s not only overpriced but also not actually so fresh – it arrives frozen from Ontario or Quebec. The choice is limited. But you know, we make it work. Part of the challenge with the matzah seems to be that grocery stores don’t coordinate so well with members of the Jewish community – I don’t need all the packaged cake mixes and stuff for Passover. But I do need matzah. And matzah meal. And some kosher for Passover grape juice. They bring in stuff that so many of us don’t buy and use that as the proof that therefore we don’t need it, so they bring in less and less of what we DO need. It doesn’t seem to have occurred to Halifax grocery stores yet that aside from matzah at Passover and the dream of kosher meat in the refrigerated section, WE BUY OUR GROCERIES THERE! We buy our breakfast cereal and vegetables and packaged foods and spices and sugar and flour and salt and apple juice and milk and eggs and cheese and….and…and…
