Comedy
Now that he’s proven himself with meatier fare like Cyrus and Moneyball, Jonah Hill suddenly seems underserved by lowbrow comedy. That’s certainly the case in this misfire directed by David Gordon Green, which re-imagines Adventures in Babysitting with Hill’s profane slob in the Elisabeth Shue role. While taking care of a socially awkward tween (Max Records), an adopted pyromaniac (Kevin Hernandez) and a skank-in-training (Landry Bender), Hill runs afoul of a gonzo drug dealer (Sam Rockwell). In the midst of the ensuing hijinks, he finds time to play sage advisor to his young charges. These Teachable Moment speeches aren’t Hill’s forte, and the script’s jokes aren’t worthy of his self-deprecating comic delivery. He’s stranded in a film that wants to be both raunchy and sweet but lands half-assedly in between. –Matt Semansky
