Halifax is brimming with trivia and quiz nights that’ll keep you
on your toes until Jeopardy‘s back on the air. And yes, it will
be hot in the bars, but hey, that’s what beer’s for. Sipping, chugging
or dousing—the possibilities are endless.
Rogue’s Roost
5435 Spring Garden, 492-BEER, Wednesdays, 10pm-12am
Running on year seven, this trivia night is packed to the max every
Wednesday. There are three rounds of 20 questions each, so you can bet
you’ll know something on the list—even if it’s the name of that New
Kids on the Block song.
Finbar’s Irish Pub
Sunnyside Mall, 1595 Bedford Highway, 832-9170, Wednesdays,
7:30pm
“It’s one of our greatest hits,” says owner Mike Casey. Finbar’s
weekly quiz night is presented by Propeller, with alternating hosts
Kate Udle, from CTV, and Alan Semadeni and Brian Sauve from Citizens of
Earth. There’s even a six-week season in effect for those hardcore
fans: if you’re the overall winner after the set six weeks, you’ll win
a $150 gift certificate to Finbar’s and 24 bottles of Propeller beer.
Eat that, Alex Trebek.
Pogue Fado/The Frigate
1581 Barrington, 429-6222, Tuesdays, 9:30pm-11:30pm
Briggs, who hosts the Tuesday event, says the Pogue’s trivia nights
have also been packed this summer and, “considering how hot the Pogue
is, that’s kind of weird.” Despite the heat, trivia-goers dive into the
three rounds of 20 questions and a fourth round of 30 questions with
all energy not used on sweating (or complaining about sweating). If
there’s a tie? “Each team member tells dirty jokes to win the prize,”
says Briggs, with a chuckle.
Rockbottom Brewery
5686 Spring Garden, 423-2938, Tuesdays, 10pm-12am
Marc Robertson hosts the Rockbottom’s weekly IQ test, and a server
at the brewery tells me Robertson themes his three rounds for the
evening, with a “hodgepodge of stuff” making up the questions. You
missed last week’s ’50s, ’60s and ’70s theme, but head out this Tuesday
to see what he comes up with next.

What about Friday trivia at the T-Room?
I agree, T-Room Trivia has been around for years now and draws a great crowd!
Ditto on the T-Room!
Is the T room trivia the one with the tall dude and the hobo looking guy with curly hair? If so I also say it should have been included.
The T-Room trivia should definitely be on this list. While it only runs for a few weeks during the summer, it’s a Friday night staple through the school year, so it’ll be starting up again soon. Cheap cover, cheap beverages, two happy hours during the game, relatively clean bathrooms, the occasional fundraiser group outside the doors making delicious grilled cheese sandwiches. You can order a pizza from nearby Alexandra’s and they’ll deliver it right to you!
The trivia nights also have a special place in my heart: I had my first date there with my boyfriend! I had a birthday party there! An Elvis Impersonator came, too! But most of all, I’ve been going back long after I graduated from Dal. You don’t need to be a student to enjoy Trivia at the T-Room, which I think is the largest misconception. Everyone is welcome!
T-Room trivia is the only trivia I go to!! Cheap drinks and you can win chocolate bars!
I think this is the second article that I’ve read in the coast that neglected to mention T-Room trivia! I would definitely say that it is one of, if not THE, best trivia in the city. It has call-out questions during the rounds where you can win chocolate bars and chips as well as great prizes for the winners. I think it also might be the only trivia with two hosts, which adds a great dynamic. Absolutely a highlight of my week!
I agree with all these T-Room comments, especially the hobo comment.
Not to beat a dead horse but, again trivia has been going on at the T-room since at least 2003, every Friday night. (Not just during the summer months) I believe it predates Rogues, by about a year, it was brought to the T-room by a Brent “Big Sexy” Desroches from that little island called PEI. Apparently trivia has been alive and well for many years in PEI. Trivia at the t-room has been a mainstay of their business for many years, and it one of my favorite things in halifax. Those of you who haven’t tried it should stop in.
and for those of you unaware there is a chocolate bar in my bookbag. If you can tell me what variety of chocolate bar is in my bookbag i will give you said chocolate bar and one domestic bottle of beer.
I don’t know what can be said that hasn’t been said already! I’ve been going to trivia at the T-room for a few years now, not missing a Friday night if I could help it. The themed rounds, inside jokes (Big Turks anyone?), and music video interludes help give this trivia a very comfortable, warm atmosphere. The cheap beer doesn’t hurt, either.
First trivia of the season will be September 11, after school goes into session.
Thanks, xcarex, for detailing the T-room info. I agree that the T-room’s a more-than-worthy place for trivia (having gone there often enough during undergrad), but since this piece on trivia’s geared for summer and the T-room isn’t really in full swing until the students come back, I made a decision to profile ones that are going all-out, year-round. There are other trivia nights as well—Menz Bar’s new Monday night trivia, and Winston’s, which is only on during non-summer months. Lots to choose from.
All other trivias pale in comparison to t-room. You just don’t get that same showmanship at other places, also the questions are more fun
T-room trivia does go all year round (except during exams). I haven’t been to a night this summer that hasn’t been pretty packed. I think in years past it may have wound down, but for the past two summers I believe it goes without breaks.
I must say that I’ve been to a few trivias in town and the T-room is definitely #1 on my list!
Trivia at the T-Room should be on this list for sure. It’s been around much longer than the Rockbottom and is a real crowd pleaser.
Friday night trivia at the TRoom (Dalhousie University, Sexton Campus) is still my favourite!
T-Room Trivia has them all beat by a long shot.
was the rock bottom trivia just put there for a laugh? Expensive bad beer and generic food mixed with horrible inexperienced service is bad enough, but through an annoying trivia host in there and i never want to go back
The T-room has been doing trivia for about a decade, puts the pogue to shame if you ask me. Not to mention better prizes and a really friendly crowd.
I think I heard a rumor that there’s trivia at the T-room?
Quiz Nite at the Colby Ale House! Tuesdays, 7:30 – 10.
I can’t help but add yet another comment to this lot. T-Room Trivia has dominated my Halifax Friday nights for a few years now. I’ve seen it pass through a couple different hosts, and while they all have slightly different styles its the traditions and inside jokes that they have carried on over the years that make it a great atmosphere to hang out on a Friday night. Not to mention the cheap drinks and cheerful service.
As one person mentioned the T-Room does not have food service. “That sucks”, one might say, but it also means that the staff has no issues with you bringing in your own food (although it doesn’t hurt to ask them if they’d like to add something to the order)! Just try heading to any of those other places with a donair pizza and poutine in tow! Alexandra’s know where the T-room is and will bring it right in to the bar, but just about anyone will deliver to 1360 Barrington if you are willing to trust you trivia teammates with a question or two while you wait at the door to bring them back food.
My condolences to the girl who’s first date was at the T-Room.
I don’t understand why the T-Room isn’t on this list! Everyone have already mentioned why it is so great. Friday nights at the T-Room has become a huge part of my life for the past few years. The cheap drink specials, the friends, the fun atmosphere and the SEXY trivia hosts have made a lot of awesome memories for me. That’s where I went to de-stress, drink the sorrows away, drink to celebrate greatness, have fun with friends, and did I mention drinking??? Those $15 pitchers of vodka waters, rum and cokes, or whatever, are incredible!!
Even if you don’t like trivia, you should check out the T-room anyway on Friday nights. I can pretty much guarantee you you will have a good time, because even if you don’t make new friends with randoms/regulars who go there, you will be entertained by the people there 😛
Want to get a big reaction: p-off engineers. 🙂 haha
Stan and Thomas FTW!
T-room Trivia = #1 for sure.
Hellllooooooo?! Free chocolate bars and chips – not to mention other delicious perks!
Come on Coast — get it right!
When is T-Room trivia? What are the prizes like?
Every Friday at 9. “Free chocolate bars and chips – not to mention other delicious perks!” aka gift certificates for the winners.
ERTCoast
TRoom trivia will resume on September 11th because the bar isn’t open if undergraduate classes aren’t in session (no school = no employees). There is trivia every Friday and Live music every Thursday night, except during exam period or periods when the university is closed.
Want to find out more? The TRoom has a facebook page!
Aaand the T-room staff is quite possibly the friendliest and sexiest there is, espeically the caveman and the hobo!
T-Room trivia is a classic, it’s been around for years but has recently been re-vamped by Stan and Thomas who put on an excellent show. So excellent in fact, that when your precious Rogue’s trivia hosts took a night off last fall Stan and Thomas pulled a double by doing Rogue’s Trivia and T-Room trivia in one week. They are two hilarious guys who do an excellent job.
Hey now, don’t dis the rogue’s host, zuzy! I go to rogue’s every week if I can to partake in their wonderful trivia, Brian does a great job. Thomas and I just did himm a favour, cause we’d hate to see them cancel a week of trivia – so many people look forward to it!
I didn’t dis, it wasn’t meant to be a dis anyway, I was just commenting on how you are on the same playing field is all.
I did my undergraderate in Halifax and absolutely concur- the T-Room was a staple and a great night out with the cheapest booze in downtown Halifax and a great question variation, avoiding those unnecessary pop-culture questions about 80s music that we could all do without.
We had to escape to the T-Room to avoid the embarrassing nightlife at Dalhousie and King’s!
woo t room.
I would just like to add my support for the T-Room… and also mention that IT’S A JACKAL
Holly: you knew all of this! haha
