This is Bauer Street, just south of Cornwallis. These buildings on the west side of the street, which were evidently built somewhat recently. Note the garages dominating the first level facade, and the accompanying curb cuts and concrete driveways. The curb cuts remove on-street parking, and so residents are parking on the driveways. The result […]

Various environmental issues
Local foodThe local food movement is growing by leaps and bounds, as our news story this week attests. But I want to draw extra attention to the province-wide “Incredible Picnic” mentioned in this week’s Shoptalk, the local version of which will be held this Sunday on the Common from 11am to 3pm. It’s worth stopping by to support a good cause and see the wide range of local food available. Eating local food is very literally the best way we can reduce our carbon footprint. I once calculated that changing our eating habits such as to prevent just one truck
Protesting the cops
Some of the folks who were arrested at the Chebucto Road protests are filing formal complaints at the Halifax Police Department, today (Thursday) at noon. They are asking people to attend a rally in front of the PD in support. Those arrested allege that excessive force was used during the arrests.
Harper lectures Russia
Sometimes you just gotta wonder if these guys look in the mirror in the morning. I mean, what else are Canadian troops doing in Afghanistan if not trying to exert some say or control on a country outside our borders? OTTAWA (AFP) – Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Thursday denounced Russia for its military […]
Neil Young in Halifax
A little birdie just called and told me that Neil Young will be playing the Metro Centre on November 29.
Maybe the Canadians can get a medal!
I mean, if they look around on the floor, back behind the podium, maybe there’s one rolling around somewhere…. Angry Swede throws down medal, quits BEIJING, Aug 14 (Reuters) – Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian threw down his Olympic bronze medal in protest on Thursday after his bid for greco-roman gold was ended by a decision […]
Dishonouring Cornwallis
Edward Cornwallis was the founder of Halifax. In return, we’ve honoured him with a statue, and have named a park, a street and a junior high school after him. Cheryl LeBlanc-Weldon doesn’t like this at all. She wants Cornwallis officially “dishonoured”—the statue pulled down and the park, street and school renamed. “I don’t think we […]
China’s Gold Medals Found to Have High Lead Content
Stop the presses! (please!) China’s impressive haul of gold medals at the Beijing Olympics was tarnished somewhat today when it was revealed that “abnormally high levels of lead” were found in the first-place medallions. The medals, which were supposed to be made entirely of gold, were instead found to be composed of 99% lead alloy […]
The olympic drinking contest, pt. 2
Yea, sure, he left a while ago, but I couldn’t pass up this photo.
Transit haters
In Toronto: Every weekday morning Sandra Cassidy wakes up to the sound of the bus carrying her neighbours to work and school. “It just comes roaring down the road. We can’t open our windows because of the smell and noise,” says the Ajax homeowner. Over the objections of residents who rely on the service, Cassidy […]
Jumped the shark
I knew this would be the year that the Olympics would finally, once and for all, jump the shark. We’ve got the censorship, the execution of dissidents, the fake fireworks, the too-ugly-to-sing girl… all we need now is a ineptly handled but bogus terrorist attack. If there were a pool, I’d say next week some […]
T & A
If it wasn’t so early in the morning I’d make all sorts of insightful, er, insights about how there’s a seamless gradation from admiring athletic prowess to a more vulgar (in the Latin sense) appreciation of physical beauty, blah, blah, blah. But seeing how I’m still on my first cup of Joe, I’m just wondering […]
