Don’t try calling. The Herald reports a major blow to the local film industry, with the closing of audio and video post-production company, PowerPost. According to the article, president and CEO Rob Power says that the company is bankrupt and shutting down immediately. At one point PowerPost employed 25 workers, now, eight staffers will be looking for work elsewhere. Power attributed the demise of the operation to a couple of trends: a movement to in-house post-production audio and video work by many local filmmakers and television production houses; and the prevalence in Nova Scotia of co-productions that often see crews

Jeanne Beker hosts the Sobey Award
Artists, you make Beks fly so high against the sky. It may not be the popular stance, but I love Jeanne Beker and her diva divineness. She may be the closest this country comes to an André Leon Talley. So I was happy to hear that she’s taking over hosting duties for tonight’s Sobey Art […]
Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk
If you’re expecting some Aesop-like morality tales from David Sedaris’ book of animal short stories, head back down the rabbit hole. Through these paw-sized character sketches and scenes, Sedaris exposes some of the most rude, contradictory and head-scratching truths about modern living, like a crow hating on part-time vegetarians (it gets worse), and a potty-mouthed, […]
David Sedaris’ stories
When David Sedaris arrives at the Chapters Dartmouth at Mic Mac Mall on Wednesday, forgive him if he doesn’t take in any local sights. The American playwright, author and New Yorker essayist is on a 60-city tour that ends in Listowel, Ireland, next June. This circuit follows a 35-day theatre lecture tour. Other than maybe […]
Radio Free Northwood
The Northwood Broadcasting Club booth is not easy to find. It’s in Northwood’s Edward L. Roach Centre for Living building, part of the Halifax seniors’ residence and nursing home facility at the corner of North Street and Northwood Terrace. Go past the busy lobby, filled with men and women in walkers and wheelchairs, visitors and […]
Au revoir Deux fm, say hello to MAKENEW
Eco-fashion designer Anna Gilkerson may be winding down her label Deux fm (at least for now), but she’s not done dressing Halifax. MAKENEW is a curated bi-monthly vintage collection, loving pulled together by Gilkerson, who’s sorted through the bins to find true vintage and special, quality pieces that are in great condition and union-made, meaning […]

Chouinard returns tonight, at the Cohn
If you want to see a big gun perform, Marie Chouinard is like the Wayne Gretzky of the Canadian contemporary dance scene. The award-winning choreographer’s company returns tonight, in what’s almost become an annual visit, with two pieces: 24 Preludes by Chopin and The Rite of Spring. It’s worth a trip through the rain in […]
It’s Giller time
All the book peeps turn in their corduroy jackets for tuxes (nothing like perpetuating a stereotype) for the Giller Prize ceremony, one of the country’s biggest literary nights. The Atlantic Book Awards Society wants you to be part of the festivities: they’re throwing a party down at the Writers’ Fed (1113 Marginal), tonight, from 8-11pm, […]
David Sedaris coming to a mall near you
Family sighs…so much Sedaris love One of my two favourite Sedaris siblings is coming to town—David will be here November 24, 7pm, Chapters Indigo at Mic Mac Mall, which probably means an H&M stop and a night of awesomeness with one of the hands-down funniest essayists out there, and his new book, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk. Now, if Amy Sedaris (who was just here to shoot The Drunk and On Drugs Happy Fun Time Hour) came to host a craft session at Atlantic Fabrics with her new book Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People, no one would need to get me
Bednarski’s The Strangest Dream wins Gemini
Everyone’s favourite Canadian awards, the Geminis (in case you wondered) were presented yesterday, including Halifax filmmaker Eric Bednarski’s The Strangest Dream, which won in the category of “Best Writing in a Documentary Program or Series.” The film recounts the story of “Joseph Rotblat, the history of nuclear weapons, and the efforts of the Pugwash Conferences […]
We miss Ray Fenwick
Ray Fenwick may have moved from Halifax but his humour and typefaces still curlicue around our hearts. Here’s the new trailer for his book, Mascots, coming out on Fantagraphics in December.
