Shame on Darrell Dexter’s NDPs for betraying our trust and handing over our protected land to commercial industry—all wildlife, especially seals, deserves protection. To add insult to injury, the ones footing the bill for this commercial activity will be the Canadian taxpayer. Enough is enough—let’s keep protected land protected! —Leif Vernest, Burlington NS

Boffo Bousquet’s tax reform
I am finally getting around to writing about Tim Bousquet and property tax reform. I have followed his writings in The Coast since he started writing about the issue. Bousquet has managed to do what a journalist is supposed to do! He did not pretend to adhere to any phony standard of journalistic objectivity, he […]
A kind of monster
Thanks, Bruce Wark, for your editorial (“Supremely unjust,” February 4) on the Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr. Aside from doubts that Khadr did kill an American army medic, the whole scenario is a philosphical minefield. If Khadr did kill someone in battle, why is it being called “murder”? Because if he’s a suspected murderer, then […]
Full transparency for MLA spending
If you have a vivid imagination, you could perhaps understand how certain MLAs rationalized that some of their expenses cited in the Auditor General’s report were used for government business. Perhaps the model ship purchased by one MLA is on display in his constituency office. Perhaps the generator purchased by another MLA will be used […]
An icy cash grab
Oh, winter. What a lovely time of holiday cheer, of loved ones and warm fireplaces, of picturesque snow-capped landscapes—and of $225.21 fines. Wait just a minute, that last one isn’t so pleasant. But it has crept into the lives of some unlucky Haligonians, me included. According to current HRM bylaws, I have 12 hours to […]
Know shelter
The Out of the Cold emergency winter shelter began organizing in the fall of 2008 as a response to a reduction in the number of shelter beds in Halifax. Together, service providers of all kinds created a safe space where those who could not access other beds in the city could come for the night. […]
Information is key
I want to thank Lezlie Lowe for “Is she safe?” (January 14). It is important that the media provides informative articles on the issue of violence against women and uncover the stories of women who have been harmed. I want to clarify a point raised in the article about the number of women on the […]
Getting schooled
Dear student who keeps sending vitriolic, grammatically flawed, typographically suspect and unsigned letters regarding his/her student loans (Letters, January 14): Evidently, your school is not requiring an acceptable level of writing skills of its students, or you are not making use of the education for which you are receiving said student loans. As an individual […]
That name again is Mr. Plow
I understand that at Christmas it is hard to shell out $50 for a parking ticket. But Halifax is not the only city who has a winter parking ban. All of Canada has! How many of you whiners have driven or ridden in a snowplow? I have ridden a few times, through snow, blowing wind, […]
Free parking is not your right
I support the winter parking ban on Halifax streets. The streets are there for the efficient and safe movement of motor vehicles and bicycles. The streets are not there for the free and unrestricted use by Haligonians to park their motor vehicles. It is not a birthright that a Haligonian with a motor vehicle be […]
City tweets beat all
I have to say: I love Tim Bousquet’s city council meeting live tweets. They are strangely amusing and, well, the best coverage I have seen of council meetings. You’d have to use brute force to make me watch the proceedings on Channel 10, but the Coast Twitter feed is perfect.—Graham MacDougall, Halifax
Scream shame
I am writing in response to an article that was published a couple of weeks ago by Lezlie Lowe regarding a vigil being held at the Spring Garden Road library (“Screaming mad,” News, December 3). Jean Steinberg, despite her claims, did not invent, create or otherwise in any way contribute toward the notion of having […]
