coffee and vegans After Cursed Arrows‘ set at Gus’ Pub back in May during Long Live the Queen, I freaked out. I bought both of their albums and listened to them when I was drunk and sad, and also when I was lying in a happy/wistful haze on my back deck. I started reading their […]

HAPPY PRIDE
Listen to this while you walk in the Halifax Dyke March for the first time, or do your hair, or put on your best shoes, or snuggle up to Dirty Dancing, or decorate your float for tomorrow. Curl up your fist to it, and dance your ass off: Sleater-Kinney and Fred Schneider – “Angry Inch.” […]
The Year of Living Room Dangerously
I don’t know what the deal is with this week (Pride? Halifax Rocks? Boob sweat?) but somehow all the things are happening, RIGHT NOW. People are doing crazy things every night of the week, we’ve already torn through two eight-packs and there’s bicycles and laughter and firecrackers everywhere. It’s wonderful. We’ve stopped by two house […]
Waiting for Weezer
It’s two minutes into a 15-minute chat with Weezer’s bassist Scott Shriner, and already I’m trying to figure out whether he’s messing with me. Moments after we connect, the affable voice on the other end of the line begins peppering the conversation with questions. “Hey! I have a question for you,” he barks. “What’s Nova […]
Prepare for thy Roomdoom
found at good food emporium last year So I nearly walked into this poster on a pole the other day. You’ve seen them, the yellow ones that read WE DIDN’T START THE FIRE, WE BUILT THIS CITY ON ROCK AND ROLL. Yes friends, these bright pages emblazoned with the wisdom of Billy Joel and Starship […]
Bloodhouse, Quivers, Grown-ups
This Tuesday night will be a difficult one for you. You will have some choices to make. Continuing on the endless train of gushery for Bloodhouse, I’d just like to politely remind you, once, unassumingly, but fervently, that the band is playing at Gus’ tonight with Calgary’s The Grown-Ups and new/old sweethearts Quivers. 10pm, cheap […]

Halifax Pop Explosion Initial Lineup Announced
The lineup for the Halifax Pop Explosion was announced yesterday and you can see it here. So what do you people think? People are pretty stoked for the Hold Steady. I am going a little nutso for The New Pornographers FEATURING NEKO FRIGGIN CASE myself. Early bird passes, alas, have sold out, but if you’re […]
Holy Fuck, They’re Playing After Jim Guthrie
dududududance! Thursday, July 29th is turning into a real one-two whammy punch, as my Dad would say. We previously told you that Jim Guthrie would be playing a show on that particular date. It turns out that Guthrie’s show is now at 7pm, and fellow Sappy-festers Holy Fuck playing a show at 10pm. Hope you’ve […]
Snoop Dogg to play in Cape Breton
Wow – so I just got an email from “newly-minted” promotional company Captive Promotions, and they’ve managed to get Snoop Dogg as well as Down With Webster on the lineup of a big outdoor show on Sunday, August 8 at the Sydney Marine Terminal. This is a good year for Snoopers – apparently he killed it at Glastonbury – so that’s kind of awesome. But wait! There’s more! In the release, Captive Promotions founder Stephen Tobin says a “major opening act” has been secured. Details will be released next week. Who do you think it might be? Drake? Will
