Forget that this record is a soundtrack because it isn’t—at least not in the traditional sense (ie glorified mixes of classic rock or otherwise well-trodden material). The lone pre-released track is Buck 65’s “Girls with Boyfriends,” which can only be found on an obscure tour compilation that sold out a few years ago. But that track, which amusingly deals with the confusion of sexual attraction, fits perfectly with the other material that Buck 65, Sook-Yin Lee and Adam Litovitz collaborated on in studio and via email. In keeping with the “inspired by” tagline, the arc of the soundtrack—via spoken word samples and hilarious expert advice—follows similar themes of sexual exploration as the film, right up to the tongue-in-cheek closer “Ending Fireworks.” An immensely satisfying collection of experimental hip-hop, electronic whimsy and witty musical curiosities which leaves us eager for future collaborations.
