Wintersleep is back, with a new album that's proving to be its most popular release yet. The Great Detachment brought a return to Halifax's Sonic Temple studio, where the group recorded its 2007 release Welcome to the Night Sky.
"There's something about that room that you want to try and capture," says guitarist Tim D'Eon. The band recorded live off the floor—producing an album that's full-bodied and energized, akin to a live performance.

"Amerika," the lead single, rings with Paul Murphy's infectious roar, overlaying thunderous instrumentals. It's the kind of anthem that prompts a crowd to put their lighters in the air and wail the chorus, which may happen Friday night: Gridlock will be the band's first home show in about three years, and is also The Great Detachment's local premiere.
The album marks a sweet spot between new heights and nostalgia. Within the past few years, the band switched labels, got new management and their lead singer had a baby boy. "There were a lot of things changing," says D'Eon. "And I think the lyrics reflect that."
