As the leaves turn colour and fall from the trees, it’s no surprise to any of us that the summer is over, and that’s a shame. There were so many opportunities to take in the sun while listening to some old faves or new releases, and there were so many great concerts that we couldn’t even begin to count.

However, even with a chill in the wind, nothing stops our favourite artists from taking to the stage. So, to ensure you don’t trap yourself at home until next summer, we’re going to count down some local concerts that you can check out. Summer may be a great time to take in all the music, but artists work year-round, so find a show that feels right for you and get out there.

1. Mat Elliott at The Carleton

Mat Elliott’s last EP South Endings proved that the Halifax-based indie soul musician could deliver smooth riffs and funky melodies all while tugging on the listener’s heartstrings. Now, Elliott is taking his talents to the Carleton on Oct. 16 with a show featuring special guest Lindsay Misiner, a fellow soul and R&B artist based in Halifax. Tickets for the show start at $20.

2. Good Dear Good at Propeller Arcade

Having recently released their latest EP Sook, indie-pop rockers Good Dear Good will be hosting their album release at Propeller Arcade on Oct. 17 alongside Green Eyes, Witch Hands. Twisting listener expectations with upbeat dance music accompanied by forlorn lyrics about self-doubt, the five-piece band is becoming one of the most dynamic in the city. Give their new project a listen and buy a ticket to their show, starting at around $17.

3. Sloan at the Light House Arts Centre

Halifax rock legends Sloan will be taking over the Light House Arts Centre on Oct. 30, returning to their hometown for what will be an energetic performance with classics from their catalogue and songs from their newest album, Based on the Best Seller, which was released on Sept. 26. Celebrate one of city’s greatest rock bands with tickets going for around $50.

4. Hospital Gossip at Stillwell Brewing

Local alt-punk band Hospital Gossip will be bringing their new album Not Tragedy to life at this album release show at Stillwell Brewing on Nov. 8. Joining them will be fellow artists High October, No, It’s Fine and Record Year. The Coast spoke to the band upon the release of their first single, “In Rain,” where guitarist and vocalist Alexander Callaghan said this of the album: “I don’t really know what I would categorize it as, and that to me is proof that we’ve done something cool.” Tickets for the show are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Hot off their latest album No Hard Feelings, Toronto-based femme rock quartet The Beaches will be in Halifax for what will certainly be one of the best shows of the year at the Scotiabank Centre on Nov. 13. Get ready to dance the night away with their blend of pop-rock and post-punk while joining the chorus of voices singing their lyrics back at them. Tickets for the show start at $45.

6. Eliza Rhinelander at The Carleton

The 20-year-old folk-pop sensation Eliza Rhinelander will be landing at The Carleton on Nov. 13 with special guest banjo-playing singer-songwriter Lia Ashkenas. As one of Halifax’s most celebrated up-and-comers, Rhinelander already has two projects to her name: an EP full of songs she wrote in high school which saw her win the Best Lyrics in Write the World’s Songwriting Competition twice, and her full-length debut The Precipice, a coming-of-age story detailing her transition into adulthood. Tickets for her Carleton show are $20 a piece.

7. Mac DeMarco at the Light House Arts Centre

Canadian indie-rock legend Mac DeMarco will be touching down at the Light House Arts Centre on Dec. 2 and 3, back-to-back performances showcasing his repertoire of psychedelic riffs. Fans can expect tracks from DeMarco’s latest album Guitar, alongside hits from throughout his career. There’s no better way to end the fall season than with one of Canada’s premier guitarists, so grab your tickets while you can at the reasonable price of around $50.

  1. WHO? I heard of Sloan, welcome to Halifax who wouldn’t know a good band if they slapped you right in the face and drew blood. This is the last place that a great band would ever be invited to or interested in coming to! Maybe Shirish Kamal Shivam.
