If you’re looking for a solid pop/rock band, look no further than Mardeen. The classic two guitar, bass, and drums setup doesn’t disappoint with these folks. Mardeen was a great pre-cursor to the main event: Sleepless Nights. This was my first ever Sleepless Nights show, and potentially my last. The band reunited recently for a three-show tour to coincide with their Keith Hamilton EP release. They speculated on stage that they hadn’t played a show in Halifax since 2009 and you could tell there were some die-hard fans in the crowd. I really, really fell in love with the band (made up of five Nova Scotia-music scene veterans) that night, but it is hard for me to say if it was because 60% of them are friends of mine and their reunion-show joy was contagious, or if I really just loved them, but either way I was thoroughly impressed. They exuded musical talent, both instrumentally and vocally, and even got the King’s College pub crawl folks dancing. The only disappointing thing about the night was knowing I wouldn’t be able to see another Sleepless Nights show any time soon.
