Miesha and the Spanks had already been on the road a week before their new album, Girls Girls Girls, even dropped. Released last Friday, it's a 10-track blast of high-energy, scrappy punk, singer Miesha Louie wailing like Corin Tucker on the opening notes of "First Blood."
Halfway through a tour that will take them to both sides of the country by the end of April, this week marks the band's Maritime run, with a pair of Halifax shows Thursday and Monday. "The east coast is our favourite because we have a bunch of friends there," says Louie from a van bound for Montreal. "We always try to have a day off in Halifax so we can go to Peggys Cove—that's our favourite little tour stop."
Louie's been touring and making records rather relentlessly since her debut EP in 2008. Girls Girls Girls was produced in England by The Buzzcocks' drummer Danny Farrant and Paul Rawson. "They're a super-tight unit, they know how to hear a song and make the best part of that song stand out," says Louie.
Girls Girls Girls is not a nod to Mötley Crüe—it's an old hashtag Louie used back when her drummer was a woman; now it's a man, Sean Hamilton. (There's only one Spank.) A road dog like Louie, he joined after Emelia Lovnik left their hometown of Calgary.
"Musically the style will change a bit; there's a signature style that every drummer has—their personal style is super-relevant," says Louie. "And personality-wise—he's gonna be best man at my wedding this summer. It makes it really easy when you have an awesome friendship. We have a similar temperament. We always seem to be on the same page."
