Metallica
Death Magnetic
(Warner)
Metallica has always been an aggressive force, however they’ve never been accused of being good songwriters. On Death Magnetic, the metal band still fails to write a solid lyric. The upside is that, while the band is a derivative of its former self, they’re still extremely tight. This is a throwback to the band’s 1980s-era roots, but it still falls short. The spotlight has been shifted away from James Hetfield (sounding great on “The Day That Never Comes”) and placed firmly on Kirk, Lars and Robert. The number of drum, bass and guitar solos on this album is so self-indulgent, one might ask why Metallica doesn’t release an instrumental album.

  1. I personally have to disagree. Which is why I’m commenting. If I agreed, I would have nodded my head and moved along. Anyway, didn’t you find the production to be of a terrible low-quality. I thought they learned the whole “garage-band” feel was a mistake on St. Anger. And the vocals were atrocious. His voice has died. I guarantee that if this had been their debut, it would have faded quite quickly into obscurity and Metallica would have been a band that didn’t quite make it.

  2. Metallica have never been accused of being good songwriters??? Right out of the gate, you open with such a ridiculous false statement, that it is quite difficult to even read the remainder of your post! I agree that Hetfield’s voice is a little sketchy at times, however this album is FULL of great lyrics. That leads me to believe that you either haven’t listen to them, or just don’t understand them. The only Metallica albums with bad lyrics is St. Anger, and that’s simply because everyone had a part in writing them, when traditionally Hetfield wrote all lyrics (as he did for DM). and drum solos? Where are these drum and bass solos you talk about?? Have you listened to this album? Sure it’s no Master of Puppets, but overall it’s damn good. even for Metallica.

  3. You know there were lots of bands in the world who where not good song writers, however all those bands are not one of the biggest bands in the universe….with tons of hit songs that are epically well written, And thats not just my opinion….their 9 Grammy’s alone will back that comment up.

  4. “however they’ve never been accused of being good songwriters.”

I’ll have whatever you’re smoking but I don’t want as much as you’ve had because you make asinine statements that result in your dumbfuckery being on full display.

I loathe present day Metallica but anyone even remotely familiar with their output knows that is one bullshit statement.

  5. You are an absolute idiot if you do not think that Metallica has good song lyrics. No one is denying that Metallica in the last ten years has been very lack luster, however look back to their golden age and take a listen, because probably the only Metallica you listen to is the black album which is relentlessly played on Q104. So pull your head out of your ass for a bit here and get educated on a subject before you become so high and mighty about it.

  6. I disagree with you Greg. I find the quality incredible. I love working and having anything from this album hit on my mp3 player. Its loud as fuck and it kicks my work into overdrive. And also I enjoy the lyrics pieces together with clean rythems and solos. Compared to all the garbage lyrics being released to our ears, I think the lyrics are pretty damn good. And another thing….. With all the autotune bullshit and sythesized blasphemy subjected to our ears, Its nice to hear a real voice or a voice that may be a little weathered by time but not lacking any passion. This a;bum fits my classification of new metal with an after taste of old metal being left in my mouth. Can’t wait to see them in Halifax. Ohh yeah and St. Anger was bad. James

  7. Buddie you have’nt a fuckien clue to what Metallica is all about maybe you should do a little research on the band and maybe even buy a cd..Holy fuck you way off into left field somewhere on this one…
