KC Spidle hasn’t cheered up at all since last year’s An End LP—if anything he’s gotten bleaker—but that’s OK, as long as he
keeps making music about it. Unearth your cassette player for this
EP-on-a-tape. Spidle’s sparse, guarded vocals and guitar are now backed
by Evan Cardwell on bass and percussion. The first two tracks, the
sullen and comparatively rocking “Mystery Man” and the intense, nearly
psychedelic “Hymn,” are the strongest of the seven songs. Spidle is
like Ian Curtis on a bad day here. It’s more tormented, but more
mature, than a year spent with the curtains drawn and The Cure’s
Disintegration on repeat.
