Lorenzen celebrates five decades of clay

Gone to pottery
Lorenzen Pottery, classing up your breakfast for 50 years

There are only a few mushrooms sprouting in Lorenzen Pottery's 50 Years in the Making. Well-known for their ceramic mushrooms, the exhibit takes a comprehensive look of Ernst and Alma Lorenzen's work. Originally from Dieppe, they settled into Lantz, NS in the 1950s where they perfected their techniques. While there are a few trademark pieces, the exhibit succeeds in showcasing the different and unique styles used by the couple. Theatrical faces appear on the teacups in #18 and #43 including the mysterious expression on the #20 jug. The animal and miniature pieces are exquisite in detail and colour. Number 22 shows off the signature Lorenzen red and #24 features "chicory blue" glaze around the bowl. What makes the Lorenzen work special is the couple's experimental take on ceramics. The colours inside the large tourquoise bowl in #41 give the illusion of sparks of light.

To July 29, Saint Mary's University Art Gallery, 5865 Gorsebrook Avenue, 420-5445
