Boogie Boys (New Music 2016)

Catchy high-energy tunes with a nod to Devo.

"Me and Steve wanted to start something poppy but still have it be punk and fast," says guitarist Cody Googoo (Alienation, Unreal Thought) of his collaborator Steve Earle. Joined by Bloodhouse's Alex Mitchell (vocals), Justin Crowe (drums) and Adam LeDrew (bass, formerly Walrus), Booji Boys released an energetic post-punk demo of six songs last month. The demo was recorded on Earle's four-track recorder, so as a result it totally rips. Booji Boys sounds a little different than all the members' other bands, which play styles from d-beat to psych-rock. With a reference to Devo's longtime character Booji (pronounced "boo-hee"), the songs are fun, catchy and snarky. "'Booji' means 'bougie' which means 'bourgeois,' which means people who hang out at Lion & Bright," says Earle. Their feelings on Devo? "Devo rules," says Mitchell. "Devo sucks," says Earle. Only half the band loves chocolate chip cookie-dough ice cream.
