The East Coast Music Association has announced renowned performers Bette MacDonald and Maynard Morrison to host next year’s East Coast Music Awards, which will be taking place in Sydney.
The husband-and-wife duo are both known across the country for their work in television, theatre, and more. MacDonald is an award winning actor, writer and comedian best known for her starring role in the television series Rideau Hall and for playing Trudy Walsh on Mr. D. MacDonald also stars in the spirited holiday theatre show Christmas in Cape Breton.
Morrison has been a mainstay in the Cape Breton theatre scene for over three decades while also being an educator. He’s worked on several productions alongside MacDonald, as well as the television show Liocracy. Morrison was a founding member of the Cape Breton Summertime Revue stage show, which featured MacDonald.
“We are thrilled to welcome Bette MacDonald and Maynard Morrison as our 2026 hosts,” says executive director Bob Hallett in a press release. “Their contributions to Atlantic Canadian arts and culture are unparalleled, and their presence brings a uniquely Cape Breton spirit to this year’s celebration.”
Also announced by the association over the last few months include work on a strategic plan involving consultation with members, a call for delegates, a mentor program connecting experienced artists and industry professionals with emerging names, and its annual general meeting, set to take place on Feb. 17, 2026.
Earlier this year, concerns were raised by members regarding the firing of former CEO Blanche Israël, who the association says was let go due to “serious risks to the (East Coast Music Awards) event.” Further information provided from Israël indicated showcasing artists were being paid very little while also paying for their own travel and hospitality. Questions have also been raised regarding the organization’s financial management and priorities in previous years.
