So this popped up on my Twitter feed today (I’m tweeting like a motherfucker these days because I’m giving up Facebook, which is like giving up smoking and becoming addicted to jelly beans) – Aux.tv has unveiled their “4 Halifax Bands You Should Check Out” list. The people that they have gotten behind are Rich Aucoin, the Ghost Bees, Botnek and Dog Day. What do you think? Are these the best current musical representatives of our fair city? Are there others who would be better suited to such publicity? Is Botnek technically even “from Halifax” anymore? Weigh in below – I’m going to smoke a cigarette eat some jellybeans.
This article appears in May 13-19, 2010.

BOTNEK is DEFINITELY from Halifax! one of the guys may have moved to Montreal a month ago but they both grew up, met and started the group in the HRM.
What’s your point? Your title already states that you know the article wasn’t about the best local artists according to Halifax. It was about local artists the rest of the world likes. If you’re curious as to who would make the list of Halifax preferred artists, check out the Best of Music section. I get that you want to stir up discussion though so good for you. I like Botnek 🙂
I have no opinions on this list one way or the other. I am interested in your opinions.
I notice you changed the title! Lol!
I’m going to say that my opinion on the list is that there shouldn’t be one since comparing all the different music of this town is like comparing apples and oranges. I know, I know, ‘cop-out’. I don’t want to be a jerk and not give my opinion but I’d first have to establish criteria for my list so that it’s a little more objective so I’m not being too biased in my decision, and it is only my decision but name dropping can be hurtful to the deserving that aren’t mentioned…
ok (you can tell I lead a busy life)
four artists…
Based on what a Haligonian thinks best represents the city’s music scene…
-Well the scene is made up of really random people so the artist needs to be loved by more than just a few kids, should be getting gigs at home and abroad I guess.
-Need to have skill.
-The artwork needs to be good on the website, shows they put thought into their product and this has become synonymous with Halifax musicians. It doesn’t have to look a certain way though.
-The sound/genre isn’t important, as long as they show some East Coast pride…somewhere.
………..10 mins later…………….
Ok my blood sugar is really low right now and I don’t have the energy to troll the myspaces of local artists and impart my judgment. I’ll think on the matter later (maybe). Otherwise, I’m just liable to go to Long Live the Queen and think that’s good enough 😛
BOTNEK may be from Halifax and re-located, but I don’t know if we can call Ghost Bees a Halifax band. The girls are from Toronto and came to Halifax for school. Now they’ve moved away. Seems like they got what they could out of the city and moved away. Lets take pride in people who make Halifax their own.
