I went to a comedy night last Monday and I’m still not over how terrible it was. Other than the host and last two comics (who I can’t comment on because I didn’t even stay to watch them perform), each comic expressed a degree of sexism, ranging from insulting to just dreadfully boring. Have none of these guys got the memo that people are tired and fed up with the sexism that the comedy industry has been plagued with for however many decades? Do they internet at all? Touching on the fact that you realize sexism and harassment are on the forefront of minds and a daily reality for majority of womxn but then continue to punch down on said population with degrading jokes does not make you edgy or provocative, it just shows you have nothing original or of real interest to share with your audience.

I had to go home and YouTube some real comedy to get rid of the violent vibes that that show left me with. I really didn’t think it could be that bad! It was painful and someone needed to tell you. —In Need Of Woke Comedy Please

  1. I bet you’re a real blast at parties. Telling everyone else what is and isn’t funny and making sure the entire evening is as politically sensitive as possible. I’m curious what was ‘sexist’. Was it actually sexist or was it just that the mxn were telling jokes you personally didn’t like?

  2. Woke comedy — it’s only acceptable to poke fun at people I personally hold a grudge against. READ: I can dish but can’t take, I’m a hypocrite snowflake

  3. Thought process of easily offended person:
    “What should I do tonight?”
“I know, let’s go to a comedy club!”

  4. If you’re funnier than the comics, shouldn’t this bitch be written with humour in mind? This was the least funny post from a funny person I’ve ever had the misfortune of reading. Please, for everyone in your life, reevaluate your definition of funny.

  5. Really hoping I inspired this piece with my “Telling men not to sexualize women is like telling women not to have their periods” but.

  6. Im a better writer than you.

Your perspective is almost as limited as your vobabulary.

There are tons of local comics addressing and promoting diversity. Did you go to any of the pride week shows? No, because you’re only intetested in what you can bash.

Halifax has a reputation for promoting female abd queer comics. As both I’ve felt it. If you were more holistic, and observed the scene for more than the most dead night of the week you’d see that

  7. Rather than tear down what exists, co-opt it or build your own show. If you’re funnier than the comics you saw, then that should be no problem.

If it is a problem… maybe the problem is not with the show you saw.

    Couple of questions:
    1) how much did you pay to see the show?
    2) were the acts amateurs?

Because Monday nights aren’t the usual big time headliner show nights. If you hired an amateur plumber and hot water came out when you wanted cold, and cold came out when you wanted hot – I’d assume you’d be more forgiving.

  8. All of the commenters here seem to discount one thing: the idea that maybe, just maybe, there were a bunch of sexist jokes on the show that night. Instead of giving this person any credit whatsoever, you jump up their ass about being a snowflake who cant handle reality.

To the person who wrote this, In Need Of Woke, maybe try focusing on the comics you do like. You said the host wasnt an asshole, yet here you are DRAGGING their show. You didnt give them any props for working against the shit you hate, and you left before the last two comics, maybe great comics, even performed. Beating on your local scene and going on about its shortcomings is doing nothing to boost the type of shit you want to see. A rising tide raises all ships and youre trying to dam the bay.

  9. Stop saying punching down, it makes it sound like women are weaker than men and I don’t know about you but I am certainly not! Here’s the thing, if you have a problem with comedy don’t complain, grow a sense of humor, write a 5 minute set, and do better than the men!

  10. INOWCP,
Saying you’re funnier than people who you believe to be sub-par comics and sexists is not really saying much at all. You seem bitter. Granted, you may be right about that show, and my pops even made similar comments about the content at the biggest comedy venue in town, a show which he paid to see.
Go to the other Monday show. It’s a little weird that comedians are labeled “alternative” for not engaging in toilet humor and sexism. It’s a clunky transition but please don’t give up on the comedians of Halifax. Or at the very least, keep writing your terrible reviews, we love the way you bitch.
