The Great North End Jerk Off wants you to make nice with a Caribbean classic. Spearheaded by Limestone Group, which emerged last summer with a passion for sharing the tasty and tropical Bahamian flavours they grew up on, it’s a day dedicated to celebrating the sweet, spicy and herbal taste of jerk foods.
“We always have the thought of our homeland on our mind when we make our beer, food and events,” says Limestone Group co-founder Damian McCartney of the Jerk Off, which spotlights the jerk cooking style originating in Jamaica with some friendly competition.
After a successful year of producing cultural experiences, McCartney, alongside co-founders, Giovanni Johnson and O’Neil Miller are back. Collaborating with local folks including Jave’s Delights, Hopyard and Unami Fusion, it promises to be an experience for the senses.
“A lot of students come here from the Caribbean and suffer from homesickness,” says Johnson. “We wanted to make a space for people who are of Caribbean descent and people interested in learning more about the culture can come and be immersed in an environment where every element has some Caribbean element to it.”
Menu items include jerk kebabs, pulled jerk sandwich and even jerk corn on the cob. As for entertainment, attendees can expect music and live performances reflective of both modern and traditional Caribbean styles. Other highlights include a pineapple eating contest, and Limestone Group will introduce its new beer—Pineapples and Coconuts.
With plans to debut new brews and share their food in Nova Scotian communities beyond Halifax this summer, Limestone Group is on the fast track as an increasingly recognizable name and brand.
As for this Saturday’s festivities, the group hopes attendees leave with a smile on their face. “We just want everyone to come out, enjoy some food music and the culture,” says Miller. “Just enjoy the day.”
