For all of the MLAs who voted in favor of the recent legislation to force a contract on teachers, and undermine their constitutional rights, lets make a commemorative plaque which will bear their names and leave a historical record of their actions.
This could be a good fundraiser for the labour movement with moneys raised being donated to foodbanks.
Perhaps also a specially dedicated website hosted by the unions listing the MLAs’Â names and pictures and a space where people can post comments showing their appreciation for the work of their elected officials.
I don’t think I would call it the Labour Hall of Fame though. Perhaps there is some other name which could be used. —Plaque Girl

“constitutional rights”…?
Lessee…freedom of conscience…religion…right to vote…freedom of press…hmmm…
Nope…nothin’ on collective bargaining rights…
That reminds me tho…have to pick up some floss…
How can it be a good fundraiser for the labor movement if the money goes to food banks?
Please don’t let this be “the last bitch…on this subject”. Union logic is so much fun…!
My opinion has always been “get the hell back to work and let your high priced lawyers deal with the situation.” Heaven knows we all pay too much taxes, and the teachers pay too much union dues. Tell the armchair assholes to reslove their differences. Teachers and parents just want to move on.
Can it please state that the government imposed the contract after the teachers rejected offers their own union recommended 3 times and then list how many of the mlas are re-elected since the silent majority of the public has had enough of unions? Maybe include the number of out of work teaching graduates, snow and PD days, poor NS student outcomes and missed student opportunities because of work to rule. That would be fun to put on the plaque too.
I’d like to see a plaque as well – one that lists the $86k-$134k salaries of N.S. teachers plus where they last went on vacation. Betcha it wasn’t Parrsboro.
How about my child’s constitutional right to an education?! Get over yourself and your union mentality OP.
Don’t be all moanin’ and bitchin’ about what teachers make, they didn’t just walk off the street and start making 86-134/yr. And what the fuck is the difference where they went on vacation anyway, nobody asks where you went on fuckin vacation. Fuckin jealousy, that’s all it is from people, whining about someone else making a decent living while they’re flippin’ burgers and listening to the 20 year-old manager. Oh the irony, all these 20-somethings that have post-secondary degrees bitching about teachers….if it weren’t for them, that cert on your wall would be an atta-boy from Wendy’s for employee of the month. You picked and paid for the liberal arts degree…they taught it and took your money. You’re still stupid….
@Bullet – you DO know that the so-called vacation you’re talking about was supposed to be an educational conference? And yeah, they actually DID walk off the street and start making $55k straight out of their BEd program (starting salary of a teacher). Your statement about liberal arts speaks to the long standing belief we have all been fed by teachers and society at large that more education is better. Teachers should be promoting more trades, not encouraging youth to take a BA. Yes, teaching is a wonderful and valuable profession, and I’m all for putting more money into classroom improvements, but should taxpayers fork out more money to support their already comfortable lifestyles when they haven’t had a raise in years or one that matched the yearly cost of living increase?
Really, so that BEd was just something they absorbed through osmosis, no work involved there eh? You DO know that in this province, it’s virtually impossible to walk into the educational system and demand full time employment and 25+ bucks an hour right out of school right? Doesn’t happen, like any other job in the world, you take your lumps and shitty conditions..and even then, sometimes full time permanent work never materializes. To your point about trades….100% in agreement, university is over-rated unless you’re taking something that is in high demand..or going to be in the next 10+ years. Were you standing in a teachers shoes and they told you you were headed off to a PD conference somewhere warm in a Canadian winter…you’d have a bloody fist fight with your ethics too. Were it held in Oslo, wouldn’t have even made the news, that was nothing but a shitty tactic used to make them look like a bunch of spoiled brats. Education is vital to the success of this province, classroom conditions are atrocious and it needs to be fixed, it’s not all about the wage. The extra-curricular things that they do justify the wage, they don’t have to participate, they choose to, on their time, something the workforce in general would NOT do, it benefits the kids. Get rid of the fucking school boards, a bunch of leaches that get nothing done. Only need 1 school board, it’s not like we have a huge population.
I don’t care if the teachers are right or wrong. I don’t care if they are over paid or under paid.
I’m saying that they are paid enough to be patient.
It is about time that we start demanding that these conflicts are resolved in a way that doesn’t affect the students.
It makes more sense to have a dozen negotiators and lawyers from both sides take 2 years to solve this issue than it does to have an entire province of teachers and students disrupted by failed negotiations.
Its always all about the money. Put that on your fucking “plaque”.
@Bullet: you take your lumps and shitty conditions..and even then, sometimes full time permanent work never materializes.”
You mean because retired teachers are taking substitute work from the new grads?
http://thechronicleherald.ca/novascotia/14…
Ah…union brothers and sisters in solidarity…
This seems to be a sensitive subject. Im sensing people are divided about the issue.
Well, gov’t should put a firm law in, soon as the teachers are pension eligible, they’re out the door, forced turn-over as it were. They’re smart…they’ll figure out something to do.
I think it’s funny that a livable wage in Halifax is a little over 20/h, so on a 40 hour work week, that’s $41,600/year. A teacher starts off at $15,000 above that, and at “work to rule” that’s around a 30 hour week for teachers for only 195 days a year. Most people work 260 days per year (5 day work week @ 40h/wk) to 312 days per year (6 day work weeks @ 48 h/wk). It’s pretty hard for me to find any sympathy. There are lots of people out there that will work their whole lives and never see $57,000/year, never have a sick day, never take a vacation, never retire, never have benefits and work 60 hour weeks with no thanks at all, and that’s a teacher’s starting salary. We live in a poor-ass province where every single facet of the civil service thinks they deserve to live better than the majority of Nova Scotians, but we have the right as a society to say that enough is enough.
Love me or hate me, I don’t give a shit. Shut the fuck up and go back to work, this butthurt routine is just embarrassing. You have the ability to live fantastic lives with a good salary, top shelf benefits/pension and job security to boot. Me thinks you take too much for granted!!
There are also tons of people out there who will bitch and moan about other people making a good living…because they’re too fucken lazy or uninspired to go out and make a concerted effort to improve their situation. Yes…it’s fucking hard, that’s the point, nothing worth doing is ever easy. It’s pretty hard for me to find sympathy with people who fucken complain about someone else making more than them and that reap the benefits of hard work, good choices and motivation. So teachers make good money….dealing with shitty kids, raised by half-interested parents that consider their brat an angel that is never wrong. The very same PARENTS who go into these schools to advocate and bitch about little Johnny getting a failing grade cause he’s lazy and sees no value in education. They earn their money and until you’ve sat your complaining ass in a school and dealt with the wrath of the shit puppets, you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.
And don’t forget their “annual” salary is for just 9 months of work/ When someone says it’s not the money, it is always about the money.
They complain about classroom sizes are too big at 20 or so but look at some of the class photos from the 1960s and the average class size was 30-35.
It seems to me that if you don’t like where you work, you can find another job.
A B.Ed is about as tough to get as a certificate in basket weaving. Seriously the way the teachers bitch and moan you would think they were rocket scientists. I fully expected many of them to walk across the harbor on water i.e. Moses.
The province should just come up with a formula that takes into account GDP, debt/deficit/transfers/taxes, national averages etc and give every public employee (doctors, teachers, nurses, physios, police, fire , whatever) the same % raise every year. Some years it might be 0.3 , others 2.3% but just pick a % for all instead of unending negotiations with each separate group. Negotiate other conditions separately but just keep the % the same regardless of the job.
This bitch is an example of a very disturbing trend toward lynch mob mentality. It is advocating shaming and harassing our elected officials simply because they made a decision that the bitcher disagrees with. I don’t think the teachers contract negotiations were handled very well but, no matter how strongly one feels about an issue, it doesn’t excuse promoting this sort of behaviour. There are already enough hate mongers in the world. We don’t need more.
And, how would the OB feel about having her picture posted online so the general public could post comments about her appearance? Not so nice,eh!?
Lol @ Bullet. You are exactly the type of nasty, hate spewing teacher that is the utter embarrassment that I spoke of in my reply. You look down on hard working people doing the jobs that make your life better, and call them lazy because they get off their asses and work much harder (in some cases) than you to pay your fucking wage. I don’t fall into that category though, I make a very comfortable living with a pension from the private sector, so when I see 30+% every two weeks go to the wages of a bunch of ingrate pricks like you, I feel no sympathy for the long, slow farting sound that you public sector union clowns make every 4 years, let alone take anything you have to say with any seriousness at all. Keep on thinking you’re better than people less fortunate (career wise) than you, and keep telling the people paying your salary they’re fucking lazy, you embarrassment.
