After eight years in its quaint little nook on Barrington Street, Just Us! Coffeehouse (1678 Barrington Street, 422-5651) is ready for a change. The cafe decided it had outgrown its much-loved space just after Christmas, nearly simultaneously to the closure of Oddjects (1717 Barrington Street), one block north. While most people hop on the negative when it comes to closures on Barrington, the cafe’s manager Ceilidh Sutherland sees it as more of a well-timed happenstance. “It was one of those perfect timing scenarios,” she says of the quick decision to move. “The For Lease signs weren’t even up.” She adds that the cafe never had the intention of leaving the street they’ve called home for nearly a decade. “With so much talk of how many businesses close on Barrington, we wanted to show that we really support the street.” With its massive windows and high ceilings, the beautiful new space will make for a much-expanded version of Just Us! Barrington, which Sutherland says will benefit not only the customers—with a goal of being more of a community gathering place—but the staff as well. The cafe aims to be serving the first cup of joe from its new home by the second week of April, and here’s hoping those big ol’ windows will be wide open by then.
