When the Halifax Burlesque Society disbanded, Cadence Macmichael feared it was the end of the line for the local burlesque scene. But she wasn’t quite ready to throw in the towel—or the corset. Macmichael gathered a keen crew of performers (many former members of the HBS) who shared her fiery spirit and six years after its first sold-out show, much of the team remains the same. “I feel like this is an exciting time for the burlesque scene in Halifax. People have really embraced it recently and we’re seeing new performers from other groups develop, as well as classes and shows other than just Pink Velvet are happening,” says Macmichael. This weekend’s celebrations will combine fun and games with sultry seduction and while no celebration is complete with out cake, no Pink Velvet celebration is complete without the stunning Miss C. That’s Macmichael’s seductive stage alter-ego who’ll make a comeback on Friday. She promises a back by popular demand performance with her trio The Sugar Shimmy Dolls, as well as the debut of a new tease. “Burlesque is definitely escapism at its finest,” she says.So go ahead, break free. –Allison Saunders
