Homegrown Cape Bretoner Kate Beaton has released her second book based on hilarious histories, Hark! A Vagrant contains the majority of Beaton’s work from her website (harkavagrant.com) as well as a few more original strips for the book. If you’re unfamiliar with Beaton’s work, she makes comic strips about all forms of history, from the Zhou Dynasty to the discovery of Canada to the sexy Tudors. But you don’t have to be a history major to understand her brilliant use of facial expression and wit. If you are a fan of her website, there may not be much new for you in terms of comics in this book, but don’t let that shy you away from this collection. Beaton’s commentary on each comic strip makes up for anything that seems lacking. Her charming and honest anecdotes will keep you in giggles on each page.
