Sidekick
Directed by: Blake Van de Graaf
(Maple)
An indie spin on the superhero genre, Sidekick explores its themes through conversation. The action is subdued; Victor (David Ingram), the film’s hero-in-training, uses his telekinetic abilities for the mundane —protecting coffee mugs from shattering, levitating liquor bottles and kicking serious butt at softball. This quiet approach is welcome—one of the more interesting scenes in Batman Begins featured Bruce Wayne sitting on the carpet, sipping orange juice and making plans. Computer consultant and comic aficionado Norman Neale (Perry Mucci) discovers co-worker Victor’s hidden talents, and becomes determined to train the softball ace for greatness. Sidekick then takes the conventional trappings of the superhero origin story—personal trauma, tights—and tweaks them. The film ends up in unexpected territory. But none of this promise makes the movie good. This is the first time at the helm for director Van de Graaf and writer/producer Michael Sparaga. Most of the film’s budget came from credit cards, and while many problems can be chalked up to Sidekick’s low budget, the film’s greatest failing cannot. Sidekick’s dialogue is badly timed, making the entire production stilted—jokes fall flat and the actors seem uncomfortable, a discomfort that transfers to the audience.

  1. I don’t have a cell phone eigther and they do suck. Heres a tip. The only ones that work are inside the malls.

  2. I agree with you wholeheartedly submitter. I am fairly certain Aliant is responsible for the payphones, so if you want to complain…get in line 😉 good luck!

  3. I agree, and what the hell happened to the one outside the Oxford theatre? They removed it for repairs and never replaced it.and cellphones suck, long live the payphone!

  4. Maybe if the asshole teens of our great city would go home and vandalize their game consoles instead of breaking the phones they may work and if they stopped with the fucking grafitti they wouldnt be so gross.Im sure 75 % of parents would be absolutly ashamed of the actions of their precious angles.the other 25 % unfortunatly dont give a shit or just stand aside and cheer on their exploits

  5. The payphones outside of the Sportsplex bus station has two payphones that either have caution tape around them or do not work ever. The payphones across from the public gardens eat your coins on one side and doesnt accept coin service on the other. The payphones outside of scotia square never ever work but on the other side of the street outside of the Barrington place shops the payphone will work 50% of the time.Oh and the payphones placed sporatically around Barrington are pretty good

  6. dont go blaming teenagers. ive see my share of pay phones getting busted up, and its not being done by teenagers. look at the 20-something year olds coming home from the bars…or the 20-something yr old men, trying to show off.
