Some of Nova Scotia’s most celebrated female vocalists will take the stage this weekend for Gimme Shelter—a benefit concert supporting women and children in need of safe housing.

The event takes place Saturday, May 17 at Paul O’Regan Hall in the Halifax Central Library. Proceeds from the evening will go to  Adsum for Women & Children, a local charity that provides shelter, housing, and support services to women, gender-diverse people, and families experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.

Kathy McNab, funding and development officer at  Adsum for Women & Children, says the event comes at a crucial time.

“We are provide housing to over 150 people currently in our permanent, safe and affordable apartments program,” McNab said. “Last year, we supported more than 1,000 women and children in need of stable housing or housing support —and the numbers are growing.”

The sharp rise, she noted, is being driven in large part by Halifax’s ongoing housing crisis. “Finding safe and stable housing is key,” McNab emphasized.

Originally planned for International Women’s Day, the concert was rescheduled after the team couldn’t secure a venue in time. But McNab says the new timing feels just right.

“We celebrate mothers all of May,” she said. “And this is a fundraiser for mothers and children.”

Jazz pianist and composer Holly Arsenault was inspired to support the event while reflecting on women facing gender-based violence. “We must all do what we can to combat gender-based violence and housing insecurity in our communities,” she said.

Visual artist and project developer Lisa Cochrane, one of the organizers, echoed the urgency. “Single mothers need our help. People will open up their couch to a single person but not to a nuclear family.”

The Gimme Shelter concert features an all-female lineup of jazz and blues performers. Cochrane called it a rare moment for the Halifax music scene. “All the musicians coming together at the same time—it’s something this city hasn’t seen.”

McNab emphasized the community spirit behind the event. “Everyone is volunteering their time, resources, and skills. It’s a true community effort.”

Tickets are available on a pay-what-you-can scale—$25, $50, or $100—and can be purchased online or at the door, pending availability.

“We hope Haligonians will come out and support,” said McNab. “Your ticket or donation helps Adsum continue to offer vital services to those who need them most.”
