Modest Mouse’s sophomore release for a major label finds singer Isaac Brock in a more cheerful mood than on The Moon & Antarctica and the band striving for a more sculpted presentation of its songs. But this is the same MM—tearing through complex emotional territory with comforting insight. There are nods to Tom Waits (“This Devil’s Workday” is a kissing cousin to “God’s Away on Business”) and Elliott Smith (“Blame it on the Tetons”).
