Wooden Shoe Café goes Dutch in Bayers Lake

Ron Van Vught started a soup and sandwich place, but started to bring in some tastes from his homeland, The Netherlands.

The one time location of Café Wanda at 8 Oland Crescent in Bayers Lake is now home to Wooden Shoe Café (405-8909). Opened by Ron Van Vught in August of 2008, it started a soup and sandwich place, but Van Vught thought to bring in some tastes from his homeland, The Netherlands. Most popular is the pannekoek, which he describes as being “halfway between Canadian pancakes and a French crepe.” You can have it for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and it is served with a variety of stuffings, including apples and Dutch bacon or asparagus and mushroom, and it always comes with gouda cheese. Dutch pea soup is also on offer, loaded with carrots, potatoes, leeks, celery root and smoked sausage. The apple pie is a big hit---including raisins and currants with a marzipan base---as is the bofche bol, a creampuff covered in chocolate. “They eat it in about 30 seconds,” says Van Vucht of his customers. “Once they get started they just lose control….” Drop by the Wooden Shoe Café for one of their Dutch delicacies from 10am-4:30pm Monday through Saturday.
